What does a healthcare data analyst do?

A Healthcare Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing healthcare data to help organizations make informed decisions. They work with electronic health records, billing data, and clinical information to identify trends, improve patient outcomes, and ensure operational efficiency. Their insights support healthcare providers, administrators, and policymakers in optimizing services and reducing costs. Analysts often use statistical tools and data visualization techniques to communicate findings to stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a healthcare data analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Healthcare Data Analyst, you need a strong background in statistics, data analysis, and healthcare systems, often supported by a degree in health informatics, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analytics tools such as SQL, Excel, Tableau, and healthcare-specific software like Epic or Cerner is essential, and certifications like Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) can be advantageous. Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication skills help translate complex data into actionable insights for healthcare teams. These skills are vital for improving patient outcomes, streamlining operations, and supporting data-driven decision-making in healthcare organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by healthcare data analysts when working with clinical data?

Healthcare Data Analysts often encounter challenges such as dealing with incomplete or inconsistent patient records, integrating data from various electronic health record (EHR) systems, and ensuring patient privacy while analyzing sensitive information. Navigating complex regulatory requirements like HIPAA is also a key part of the role. Analysts must develop strong problem-solving skills and maintain close collaboration with clinical and IT teams to ensure data accuracy and meaningful insights.

What is the difference between Healthcare Data Analyst vs Healthcare Data Scientist?

Healthcare Data Scientists perform more complex data modeling and predictive analytics, requiring advanced technical skills and higher education. Both roles are vital in healthcare but differ in scope and complexity.

How do I become a certified healthcare data analyst?

To become a certified healthcare data analyst, you typically need a bachelor's degree in health informatics, data science, or a related field, along with experience working with healthcare data. Earning certifications such as the Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) can enhance your credentials. Proficiency in data analysis tools like SQL, Excel, and statistical software is also important for this role.

Is there a demand for healthcare data analysts?

Healthcare data analysts are in high demand due to the increasing focus on data-driven decision making in healthcare organizations. The role requires skills in data management, statistical analysis, and tools like SQL and Excel, with job growth expected to be faster than average over the next several years.

What degree do you need to be a healthcare data analyst?

Healthcare data analysts typically need at least a bachelor's degree in fields such as health informatics, statistics, data science, or a related area. Many employers prefer candidates with a master's degree or relevant certifications in data analysis or healthcare analytics. Healthcare Data Engineer

Full-time Regular

12 days ago Requisition ID: 1508

Blue & Co., LLC is an independent advisory and accounting firm providing tax, audit, and consulting services with a focus on practical, client-centered solutions. We combine deep industry expertise with a collaborative culture to help clients navigate complex financial and operational challenges.

Help Build the Future of Data Consulting

Blue & Co. is making a significant investment in Data & Analytics as a strategic growth initiative for the firm. We are building a modern Data & Analytics practice focused on developing proprietary data products, AI-enabled consulting services, and scalable analytics platforms that help healthcare organizations make better business decisions.

We believe AI is fundamentally transforming how consulting is delivered. Successful candidates will be comfortable leveraging modern AI tools to accelerate analysis, improve code quality, automate repetitive work, and solve complex business problems while exercising sound professional judgment.

While this position will spend most of its time supporting our nationally recognized Healthcare Consulting practice, the solutions you build will help establish scalable capabilities that extend across the entire firm.

This is an opportunity to help shape a rapidly growing practice - not simply support one.

Preferred Locations: Louisville, Indianapolis. Candidates in other Blue & Co., LLC locations will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with leadership to architect an enterprise healthcare data ecosystem and develop multi-year technical roadmaps aligned with business objectives.
  • Design reusable data platforms that support multiple healthcare clients rather than one-off solutions.
  • Build frameworks and accelerators that improve delivery speed across consulting engagements.
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest and transform data from diverse internal and external healthcare sources.
  • Perform handsโ€‘on data extraction and scripting across hospital EHR systems (Epic, Meditech, CPSI, Cerner, etc.) and financial platforms.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to automate manual data movement and validation tasks to ensure high data integrity and reduced processing times.
  • Implement and monitor data governance and security protocols to ensure all data engineering practices remain PHI/HIPAA compliant.
  • Establish engineering best practices for the broader Data & Analytics team.
  • Partner with Data Analysts and healthcare consultants to bring new analytics products to market.
  • Evaluate emerging AI and data technologies and recommend where they can improve consulting delivery.
  • Provide the vision and handsโ€‘on coaching necessary to ensure data analysts are supported in their technical growth and project execution.
Technical Requirements
  • Experience designing and implementing cloudโ€‘based data platforms using Microsoft Fabric, Azure, Snowflake, or comparable modern analytics technologies.
  • Deep familiarity with 835/837 claims data, HL7/FHIR standards, and EHR/EMR database structures.
  • Experience handling both structured (relational) and unstructured (JSON, XML, flat file) healthcare data feeds.
  • Advanced SQL development and query optimization skills; proficiency in Python or PowerShell for data automation.
  • Strong understanding of dimensional modeling, Star Schema design, and data lakehouse architecture.
Preferred & Related Skills
  • Experience working in healthcare consulting, reimbursement advisory, or revenue cycle services.
  • Proven ability to navigate clinical, financial, and pharmacy data extracts from complex healthcare environments.
  • Experience creating scalable, reusable healthcare data products that can be deployed across multiple clients.
  • Ability to translate complex infrastructure and data architecture concepts for nonโ€‘technical consulting leads and client executives.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively leverage AI tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) to accelerate engineering, automate repetitive tasks, optimize code quality, and solve complex technical problems.
Nice to Haves
  • Knowledge of Medicare cost reporting (HCRIS) data structures
  • Familiarity with Prompt Engineering to leverage LLMs for troubleshooting and pipeline optimization.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, backend architecture, or ETL development.

We are responsive. We are caring. We are advocates.

Blue & Co., LLC, is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, veteran status, or any other protected category.

Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future employer sponsorship.

Agency candidates will not be considered for this position.
