Description
The Office of Residence Life and Housing has an immediate opening for a Residence Hall Director (RHD). The RHD will work under the supervision of the Director of Residence Life and Housing. The RHD is responsible for the proper administration and management of the residence hall to which they are assigned, the welfare of the students, and for the facilities and physical properties of the Residence Hall. When not specifically maintaining office hours, the RHD is on call and is expected to respond to situations that may arise. The RHD's work in tandem with the residence hall staff, which could include a Graduate Assistant (GA) and undergraduate Resident Assistants (RA's). Hourly personnel are assigned to some facilities where midnight to morning desk coverage is required.
The RHD is hired for a nine-month period (mid-August thru May), paid once monthly, over a 12 month period. Apartment residence is 12 months. A minimal rent is charged; all utilities and basic residential furnishings are included. Summer employment is usually available, either at hourly compensation or at a 2/9th's percentage of annual salary.
Examples of Duties
  • Supervise staff and residents in the formulation and presentation of residential programming, hall projects and recreational activities.
  • Select and train residential staff.
  • Teach, model and enforce the rules and regulations of the University, the Official Student Handbook and all other policies of the University.
  • Convey information about various matters to the residents.
  • Foster and maintain a living and learning environment that is supportive of student needs and conducive to student success.
  • Monitor the satisfactory social and behavioral conduct of residents.
  • Serve as liaison between the students and the administration.
  • Participate as a panelist in student disciplinary hearings, in addition to any disciplinary proceedings administered within the purview of residence hall government.
  • Observe and report safety concerns.
  • File damage and incident reports to the proper authorities; submit and monitor requests for maintenance services; cooperate with university personnel during repairs; and provide the overall team leadership within the residence hall for all employees and residents.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections, weapons or contraband searches (as needed or scheduled) and cooperatively administer Fire Drills and other emergency procedures.

Typical Qualifications
  • Masters in College Student Development, Counseling or related academic disciplines preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; familiarity with Windows and Office Suite products
  • Bachelors with a minimum of two years' experience working in residence life/higher education settings
