Job description

About us
National Grid lies at the heart of a transforming energy system, spanning the US and UK. Our businesses supply gas and electricity, safely, reliably and efficiently to millions of customers and communities. But we also drive change through engineering innovation and by incubating new ideas with the power to revolutionize our industry.
National Grid Ventures (NGV) is the competitive division of National Grid plc, one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world. It operates outside of National Grid's core regulated businesses in the US and UK where it develops, operates and invests in energy projects, technologies and partnerships to accelerate the development of our clean energy future.
National Grid Ventures' diverse portfolio of energy businesses across the US, UK and Europe includes sub-sea electricity interconnectors, liquefied natural gas, battery storage, as well as conventional generation assets on Long Island.
National Grid Ventures is hiring a Business Development Manager for its power generation business. This hybrid position can sit in either our Brooklyn, NY, Hicksville, NY, Waltham, MA or Boston, MA offices.
Job Purpose
National Grid Ventures safely and efficiently operates a fleet of nearly 4 GW of power generation assets that keep the lights on for two million people on Long Island, and we are exploring opportunities to develop new generation to serve additional customers across the US. The Business Development Manager will lead commercial structuring and business development workstreams across NGV's growing generation portfolio.
Working collaboratively within a broader commercial team, the Business Development Manager will apply commercial and analytical skills to identify, evaluate, and win new energy infrastructure project opportunities, inform and structure optimal commercial arrangements, and develop new concepts to extract value from existing assets, all with a view toward enhancing the value of NGV's generation portfolio and delivering strong risk-adjusted returns for NGV US.
This role requires the ability to work under formal and tight bid deadlines, strong project management skills, and strong coordination across the NGV US team and other National Grid corporate functional groups such as Strategy, Finance, Operations, Engineering, and Legal. This role reports to the Generation and LNG Commercial Director under the Chief Commercial Officer of NGV US.
Key Accountabilities
  • Utilize market, competitor, and customer intelligence to support the origination of potential growth opportunities related to NGV's existing asset base and aligned with corporate strategy
  • Lead business case development and commercial impact analyses for new investments or bid opportunities
  • Manage and develop quantitative and qualitative analyses of opportunities, including building and managing financial models and assessing risk scenarios
  • Develop materials and strategies in support of commercial contract negotiations
  • Monitor industry trends and policy/regulatory developments that may impact business outcomes and emerging opportunities
  • Prepare project and portfolio updates, executive briefings, and investment committee papers for internal audiences
  • Lead cross-functional teams to prioritize and deliver on diverse and simultaneous workstreams in support of commercial initiatives
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues across business units, external partners, community and government stakeholders, consultants and subject matter experts, customers, technology developers, and others

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, economics, engineering, or related field
  • At least 10 years experience in energy, utilities, consulting, or related fields, with minimum 5 years experience in roles with a strong commercial or financial analysis component; preference for candidates with prior experience in energy trading/energy procurement or power generation/renewables development
  • Robust knowledge of US energy markets, business models, policy, regulatory frameworks, and market fundamentals
  • Deep understanding of financial and commercial analyses and ability to articulate commercial value drivers in highly-competitive environments; detail-oriented and quantitative
  • Strong written, oral, and visual communication skills and demonstrated ability to effectively message complex opportunities and associated financials to senior management
  • Highly collaborative & a team player
  • Comfortable in agile environments that require creative thinking and charting new paths
