What is a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO)?

A Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) is an entity that helps businesses or organizations pool their purchasing power to negotiate better prices and terms with suppliers. GPOs are commonly used in industries like healthcare, hospitality, and manufacturing to secure bulk discounts on products and services. By leveraging the collective volume of their members, GPOs can offer cost savings, streamlined procurement processes, and access to a wider range of vendors. Members typically pay a fee or a percentage of savings to participate in a GPO.

How does working in a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) typically involve collaboration with suppliers and member organizations?

Professionals in a Group Purchasing Organization often serve as a crucial link between suppliers and member organizations, facilitating negotiations, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring contract compliance. Daily responsibilities include analyzing purchasing data, coordinating with suppliers to secure favorable pricing, and troubleshooting procurement issues for member organizations. Teamwork is essential, as GPO staff regularly collaborate with procurement specialists, contract managers, and stakeholders from member organizations to align purchasing strategies and respond to evolving needs. This collaborative environment fosters strong communication skills and provides opportunities to develop expertise in vendor management and supply chain optimization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) professional, and why are they important?

To excel in a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) role, you need expertise in procurement, contract negotiation, and supply chain management, often supported by a degree in business, supply chain, or a related field. Job description

This organization operates in the healthcare cost optimization and procurement space, partnering closely with long-term care, skilled nursing, and post-acute care facilities that are under constant pressure to control operating costs while maintaining high standards of care. In an environment where margins are tight and supply costs continue to rise, the company focuses on driving measurable financial impact through smarter purchasing strategy, vendor consolidation, and access to leveraged Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) contracts. Their work is deeply embedded in the operational reality of healthcare facilities, helping leadership teams make more informed purchasing decisions that directly improve bottom-line performance.

Rather than functioning as a traditional vendor or supplier, the organization acts as a strategic procurement partner, sitting between facilities and the broader supplier ecosystem. They analyze spend patterns, identify inefficiencies, renegotiate contracts, and streamline purchasing processes across critical categories such as medical supplies, pharmacy, dietary, housekeeping, and facility operations. The goal is not only to reduce costs but also to bring structure, visibility, and long-term stability to procurement systems that are often fragmented across multiple facilities and vendors.

We are hiring a Purchasing Director who brings deep, hands-on experience in Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) and/or nursing home procurement environments. This is a senior-level, high-impact role responsible for shaping and executing purchasing strategy across a portfolio of healthcare clients, with a direct focus on reducing costs and improving procurement efficiency. The ideal candidate is someone who already understands the GPO ecosystem at a practical level-how contracts are structured, how pricing tiers are negotiated, and how to leverage purchasing power across multiple facilities to drive real savings.

This role requires someone who is highly familiar with the realities of healthcare operations and procurement pressure points, particularly within long-term care or skilled nursing environments. You will be expected to work directly with vendors, distributors, and GPO networks while also partnering closely with internal leadership and facility operators. The role is based out of either Monsey, NY or West Palm Beach, FL, and requires consistent in-office presence or local availability. This is not a theoretical or advisory position-it is a hands-on execution role where decisions directly impact cost structure, vendor relationships, and operational efficiency across facilities.

We are fully open on compensation for the right individual and will structure an offer that reflects their expertise and impact. If someone is truly strong in GPOs and healthcare procurement leadership, we are prepared to do whatever it takes to bring them into the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Lead procurement strategy across healthcare facility clients with a focus on cost reduction and efficiency
  • Leverage existing GPO relationships and contracts to optimize pricing and supply agreements
  • Identify new sourcing opportunities and consolidate vendors where appropriate
  • Negotiate contracts with suppliers across medical supplies, pharmacy, dietary, housekeeping, and facility operations
  • Analyze spending patterns across facilities and implement cost-saving initiatives
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, distributors, and GPO networks
  • Partner with internal leadership to align purchasing strategy with financial and operational goals
  • Monitor market pricing trends within healthcare supply chains and adjust procurement strategy accordingly
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare purchasing standards and contractual obligations
  • Support facility teams in resolving supply chain or vendor-related issues quickly and efficiently
Qualifications
  • Strong background in Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) is required
  • Experience in nursing homes, long-term care, assisted living, or post-acute healthcare environments strongly preferred
  • Proven track record in procurement, purchasing, or supply chain leadership roles
  • Deep understanding of healthcare vendor networks and contract structures
  • Strong negotiation skills with measurable impact on cost savings or margin improvement
  • Ability to manage multiple facility relationships and purchasing priorities simultaneously
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, operationally driven environment
  • Based in or willing to commute regularly to Monsey, NY or West Palm Beach, FL
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and financial acumen
Compensation

We are fully flexible on compensation and will structure an offer that reflects the right candidate's experience, expertise, and market value. For strong GPO and healthcare procurement leaders, we are prepared to do whatever it takes to secure the right individual, including designing a top-tier compensation package aligned with their level and expected contribution.

Relocation support is available for the right candidate. If the individual is not currently local, we are open to assisting with relocation to either the Monsey, NY or West Palm Beach, FL office locations to ensure a seamless transition into the role and organization.
