What is a groundman?

Groundmen, also known as ground workers or groundpersons, are entry-level workers in the electrical utility or construction industries. They assist linemen and other crew members by handling tools, materials, and equipment on the ground. Their responsibilities include maintaining a safe work area, preparing and organizing equipment, and supporting the team with various manual tasks. Groundmen play a crucial role in ensuring that work on power lines, poles, or construction sites runs smoothly and efficiently. This position often serves as a starting point for advancing to more specialized roles in the utility field.

What does a groundman do?

A groundman assists with the construction and maintenance of power lines. In this career, you work on the ground below the lines, handing necessary materials and tools to other workers, such as conduit and cables. Your duties also include some prep tasks like gluing conduits together. In this position, other expected responsibilities include padding ditches and digging holes for setting poles, cleaning up job sites, clearing brush away, and operating some equipment such as a roto hammer and jackhammer. It’s also your job to let customers know if they can expect a disruption in their electricity, and manage traffic around the job if necessary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a groundman, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Groundman, you need a basic understanding of electrical systems, physical stamina, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand and power tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safety protocols is typically required, and OSHA certifications are often preferred. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication help Groundmen assist linemen safely and efficiently. These skills ensure safe job site operations, minimize accidents, and support the overall effectiveness of utility crews.

What are some common challenges faced by groundmen in the utility or construction industry?

Groundmen often face challenges such as working in various weather conditions, handling heavy equipment, and maintaining safety in potentially hazardous environments. The role requires constant attention to safety protocols, especially when working near energized lines or heavy machinery. Adapting to changing job sites and effectively communicating with linemen and other crew members are also key to ensuring smooth operations. Building experience in this role can provide valuable on-the-job training and open up advancement opportunities to positions like lineman or equipment operator.

What is the difference between Groundman vs Lineman?

AspectGroundmanLineman
CredentialsHigh school diploma, safety trainingHigh school diploma, safety training, apprenticeship

How much do you get paid for being a groundman?

Groundmen typically earn between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on experience, location, and union or company pay scales. Entry-level positions may start at the lower end, while experienced groundmen or those with specialized skills can earn higher wages. Overtime and benefits can also affect overall compensation.
