What is a graphic designer temporary?

A Graphic Designer Temporary job is a short-term position where a designer creates visual content for marketing, branding, or digital media projects. These roles are often used to cover staff absences, seasonal workloads, or specific design projects. Temporary graphic designers may work in-house for a company or as freelancers through agencies. The duration of the job can range from a few weeks to several months, depending on the employer's needs.

What types of projects do temporary graphic designers typically work on, and how might these differ from permanent positions?

Temporary graphic designers are often brought in to assist with short-term projects like marketing campaigns, seasonal promotions, brand refreshes, or overflow work during peak periods. Compared to permanent roles, these assignments tend to focus on specific deliverables with tight turnaround times, requiring you to quickly understand client needs and existing brand guidelines. You might work independently or as part of a creative team, collaborating closely with marketing managers, copywriters, and other designers. This setup offers valuable experience across diverse projects, helping you expand your portfolio and build connections in the industry, even though the engagement may be brief.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the graphic designer temporary position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graphic Designer Temporary, you need a solid grounding in design principles, proficiency in layout and typography, and a relevant degree or portfolio demonstrating your creative abilities. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with project management or asset sharing platforms are typically required. Strong time management, adaptability, and effective communication help temporary designers quickly integrate into teams and respond to fast-paced project needs. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality visual content that meets brand standards and tight deadlines common in temporary roles.

Job description

Placement Type:
Temporary
Salary:
$45 Hourly
Start Date:
Sep 7, 2026
Our agency client is seeking three talented Graphic Designers with strong experiential, event, activation, or environmental design experience to support creative development for a major technology event taking place in April.
This is an exciting opportunity for designers who thrive on creating high-impact visual experiences at scale and can translate strong conceptual design into polished, production-ready environmental and event graphics.
IMPORTANT: Candidates must have portfolio samples demonstrating experiential marketing, event activations, environmental graphics, spatial design, or other work created for physical environments. Experience designing work that exists at scale within an environment is essential for this role.
Details
  • Start Date: ASAP; ideally by the end of next week, but realistically the following week
  • Duration: Through the end of March
  • Hours: Approximately 30 hours/week, with flexibility based on project needs
  • Location: Fully remote; onsite is an option for candidates located in NYC or Boston
What You'll Do
  • Support Art Directors from initial concepts through final production design handoff.
  • Develop graphic concepts and comps for event and experiential environments.
  • Create 2D designs at scale and translate concepts into realistic rendering formats.
  • Develop elevations and other visual representations of environmental designs.
  • Design large-format graphics while accounting for scale, production requirements, and the physical environment.
  • Translate established brand guidelines into polished, sophisticated event and experiential assets.
  • Work across multiple brands and projects while maintaining a high-end, big-brand aesthetic.
  • Communicate design concepts effectively through sketches, mockups, found imagery, and other visual approaches with minimal direction.
  • Collaborate with Art Directors and other creative partners to refine concepts and prepare work for production.
What We're Looking For
  • 4+ years of professional graphic design experience.
  • Strong graphic design fundamentals and a sophisticated eye for typography.
  • Mastery of Adobe Illustrator, including the ability to create complex gradients.
  • Experience working with gradients, noise, texture, and other advanced graphic treatments.
  • Strong understanding of typography and type hierarchy - a true typography-focused designer.
  • Experience designing for large-format print and graphics at scale.
  • Experience with experiential marketing, event design, brand activations, environmental graphics, spatial design, or trade show design.
  • Ability to understand how graphics translate from a 2D design file into a physical environment.
  • Experience taking designs through concept, comping, rendering, elevation, and/or production handoff.
  • Experience working within established brand guidelines and creating polished assets for major brands.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and respond quickly in a fast-paced agency environment.
  • Experience with digital design, UX, animation, or motion is a plus.
Portfolio Requirement - Critical
Candidates must include portfolio examples of experiential, event, activation, environmental, spatial, or large-scale design work.
We are specifically looking for examples that demonstrate how the designer has created work at scale within a physical environment, such as:
  • Event activations
  • Experiential marketing campaigns
  • Trade show environments
  • Conference/event graphics
  • Environmental graphics
  • Retail or branded installations
  • Large-format graphics
  • Stage or event designs
  • Wayfinding systems
  • Branded spaces or immersive experiences
  • 3D/environmental renderings

A portfolio consisting primarily of digital, social, web, or traditional print design without examples of work applied to a physical environment will not be considered a strong match.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal designer combines excellent graphic design and typography skills with real-world experiential design experience. They should be comfortable moving between concept development and the practical realities of designing graphics for physical spaces, including scale, elevations, large-format production, and environmental applications.
