What is a contract graphic designer?

Contract graphic designers are creative professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to design visual content such as logos, marketing materials, websites, and more. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work for multiple clients or agencies, often remotely or on-site as needed. Their work scope is defined by a contract, which outlines the project deliverables, timeline, and payment terms. This arrangement allows businesses to access specialized design skills for specific projects without committing to a long-term hire.

What does a contract graphic designer do?

A contract graphic designer works on design projects on a freelance basis. As an independent contractor, your duties include communicating with clients to define their needs for each project. You create the visual elements for websites, advertisements, marketing materials, or any visual asset required by the client. You can also work on branding campaigns or help a company rebrand or enhance its image with new logos and images. Your responsibilities involve using design software such as Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Adobe InDesign. You may need to deliver completed assets in predefined formats or resolutions, particularly if they are to be used in print. As a contractor, you must market your services to attract new clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract graphic designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Graphic Designer, strong visual design skills, proficiency in typography, color theory, and a relevant degree or portfolio are essential. Expertise in industry-standard software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with project management tools are typically required. Excellent communication, creativity, and time management skills help set top designers apart, especially when collaborating remotely or on tight deadlines. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality, client-focused designs within specified timeframes, driving client satisfaction and repeat business.

How do contract graphic designers typically manage workflow and communication with multiple clients simultaneously?

Contract graphic designers often juggle several projects at once, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. Most use project management tools and clear documentation to keep track of deadlines, feedback, and revisions for each client. Regular check-ins, status updates, and timely responses are important to maintain client satisfaction and ensure all project requirements are met. Establishing clear expectations at the outset helps prevent misunderstandings and streamlines collaboration.

Job description

Objective
Composely is seeking a contract graphic designer to support a portfolio of marketing and brand initiatives, producing high-quality visual assets across digital and print channels. This role is intended to provide consistent, on-brand design support across social, web, email, and print, reducing turnaround time and easing capacity constraints on the internal creative team. This position will initially serve as a pilot engagement, with the potential to expand into an ongoing contractor relationship depending on performance and business needs.
Profile Overview
We are looking for a versatile, detail-oriented designer with strong visual judgment, the ability to work fluidly across multiple design tools, and comfort managing a varied workload with minimal oversight. The ideal candidate will:
  • Have experience designing social graphics, website landing pages, PDF and print design, and email design
  • Be comfortable working across Adobe, Canva, and Figma depending on the project
  • Understand brand guidelines and maintain visual consistency across deliverables
  • Provide proactive feedback on briefs, templates, and design processes
  • Potentially assist with overflow design requests during high-volume periods

Scope
  • Contract role
  • Estimated commitment: approximately 10-15 hours/month depending on workflow needs
  • Pilot engagement beginning in September with potential for ongoing work
  • Flexible workload based on contractor capacity and evolving business needs

Responsibilities
  • Design graphics for social media (static posts, carousels, reels, ads) aligned with brand and platform best practices
  • Design and lay out website landing pages and digital campaign assets in collaboration with marketing and web teams
  • Create and format digital PDFs, including one-pagers, sales collateral, guides, etc.
  • Design print graphics such as flyers, signage, brochures, and event materials, with attention to print-ready specs (bleed, CMYK, resolution)
  • Build email designs/templates that are visually engaging and render well across email clients
  • Maintain and apply brand guidelines consistently across all deliverables
  • Collaborate with internal marketing and stakeholders through Slack and internal meetings
  • Participate in occasional internal discussions regarding brand and design standards

Skills & Qualifications
  • Proven portfolio demonstrating range across social, digital, print, and email design
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; XD or Premiere a plus)
  • Proficiency in Canva for fast-turnaround and templated content
  • Working proficiency in Figma for web/landing page design and collaborative design workflows
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, color theory, and visual hierarchy
  • Experience preparing print-ready files (bleed, trim, CMYK vs. RGB, resolution requirements)
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with distributed teams
  • Strong attention to detail and deadline management
  • Experience using Slack and collaborative project management systems preferred
