What are ghost writers?

Ghost writers are professional writers who create content, such as books, articles, blog posts, or speeches, on behalf of someone else who is credited as the author. The person who hires the ghost writer usually provides their ideas, stories, or expertise, while the ghost writer crafts the material in the client's voice and style. Ghost writers often work with celebrities, business leaders, or anyone who wants to publish content but lacks the time or writing skills. The arrangement is typically confidential, and the ghost writer does not receive public acknowledgment for their work.

What Is a Ghostwriter?

A ghostwriter is an unnamed author who writes material for someone else, usually a client or employer. In this career, you work for hire and take no credit for the work you create, allowing another author to produce the story for a fee instead. You can create various types of materials, from advertising or business copy to book manuscripts and website or other professional copy. Employers often hire ghostwriters as on-staff writers or pay freelance writers to complete one project at a time as needed. Some are also hired by book authors to write over a given time period. Typically, the goal is to produce writing in the voice of a public figure, but established authors of prolific series sometimes hire ghostwriters to help them push out a high volume of work.

How does a ghost writer typically collaborate with clients to capture their voice and ideas accurately?

Ghost writers frequently work closely with clients through interviews, questionnaires, and regular feedback sessions to ensure the content reflects the client's unique voice and perspective. This process often involves extensive note-taking, reviewing previous works or speeches, and multiple drafts to refine tone and messaging. Building trust and maintaining open communication are essential, as clients may share sensitive or personal stories. Successful ghost writers are adaptable and skilled at quickly understanding and emulating different writing styles to deliver authentic and engaging material.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Ghost Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ghost Writer, you need exceptional writing, research, and editing skills, often supported by a background in journalism, communications, or English. Familiarity with word processing software, content management systems, and tools for plagiarism checking is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, discretion, and adaptability help you capture the client’s voice and manage confidential relationships. These abilities ensure high-quality, authentic content creation that meets client expectations and maintains trust.

Annual base salary is exclusive of fringe benefits, retirement plan employer contributions or potential stipends (for eligible employees). Pay ranges at SAA are reasonable estimates of what the School anticipates paying for a role but are not guaranteed. If hired at SAA, your final annual base salary will be determined by factors such as skills, education, experience, job level, part-time status and number of months of work per academic year. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity with our current employees as a part of any final offer.
