As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for galley in the United States is $28.30, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.28 and $28.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by galley crew members on ships, and how can they be managed?

Galley crew members often face challenges such as working in confined spaces, maintaining high standards of food safety, and managing meal preparation for large groups under tight schedules. Teamwork and clear communication are essential to ensure smooth operations, especially during busy meal periods. Adapting to the ship's motion and variable work hours also requires flexibility and stamina. Many galley teams develop efficient workflows and rely on established safety protocols to overcome these challenges and deliver quality meals to crew and passengers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Galley Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Galley Worker, you need basic food preparation skills, knowledge of food safety standards, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, sanitation systems, and possibly certifications like ServSafe is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, timely, and high-quality meal service in fast-paced environments such as ships or institutional kitchens.

What are galley jobs?

Galley jobs refer to roles in ship kitchens or food preparation areas on ships, cruise lines, or naval vessels. These positions often involve cooking, cleaning, and food service tasks, requiring knowledge of safety standards and sometimes certifications like food handling licenses.

What is the difference between Galley vs Line Cook?

AspectGalleyLine Cook

Work EnvironmentShip kitchens, confined space, maritime settingRestaurant kitchens, fast-paced environment
Industry UsageMaritime, cruise ships, naval vesselsHospitality, restaurants, catering
Job RoleAssist in food prep, maintain kitchen cleanliness, support chefsPrepare dishes at specific stations, follow recipes, ensure quality

While both roles involve culinary skills and food preparation, a Galley typically refers to a crew member working in a ship's kitchen, focusing on supporting the culinary team in a maritime environment. A Line Cook works in a restaurant setting, preparing specific dishes on the kitchen line. The main difference lies in the work environment and specific responsibilities, though both require similar culinary credentials.

What are galley jobs on a ship?

Galley jobs refer to positions responsible for preparing, cooking, and serving food on a ship. The galley is the ship's kitchen, and staff such as cooks, chefs, stewards, and kitchen assistants work there to ensure crew and passengers receive proper meals. These roles involve maintaining cleanliness, adhering to safety and hygiene standards, and sometimes managing inventory and meal planning. Working in a galley requires teamwork, organization, and the ability to work in a confined and moving environment. Opportunities exist on cruise ships, cargo vessels, and naval ships.
