Galley Manager information

What are Galley Managers?

Galley Managers are responsible for overseeing the operations of a ship’s kitchen, or galley, ensuring that food is prepared safely, menus are planned, and supplies are managed efficiently. They supervise kitchen staff, maintain hygiene standards, and coordinate meal service according to the vessel’s schedule. Galley Managers also handle inventory, budgeting, and compliance with health and safety regulations to provide nutritious meals for crew and passengers on board.

What are some common challenges faced by a Galley Manager and how can they be effectively addressed?

A Galley Manager often faces challenges such as coordinating meal preparation for large groups with diverse dietary needs, maintaining strict food safety standards, and managing inventory in often limited storage spaces. Effective time management and clear communication with kitchen staff are essential to ensure smooth operations, especially during peak meal times. Building strong relationships with suppliers and staying organized with inventory tracking can help prevent shortages and waste, while regular training ensures that all staff adhere to safety protocols.

NATURE & HOURS OF WORK: The season runs from May to early August. Hours and days of work are entirely dependent upon the Alaska Department of Fish & Game’s announced fishing openings, which are determined by pre-/mid-season predictions and actual fish movement. While we can't guarantee any definite number of hours, when the fishers are fishing, we are buying - this requires working on a shifting, tidal schedule and can run anywhere from nothing to more than sixteen hours per day, seven days a week. LIVING CONDITIONS: Our seafood processing facilities are a very remote part in Alaska. Housing – will have own room with shared bathroom facilities. There are no health care options readily accessible. There is no cellphone signal and limited internet available. Communication is very limited.
