These roles often require advanced skills, leadership, and extensive industry knowledge, and may include bonuses or profit-sharing components.

How do I get in the union for construction?

To join a construction union, you typically need to complete an apprenticeship program or have relevant work experience, and meet the union's eligibility requirements. Once accepted, you'll undergo training and earn union wages and benefits.

What is the highest paid union job?

In union construction, the highest paid roles are often specialized trades such as elevator installers, pipefitters, or crane operators, who can earn high wages due to their skills and experience. These positions typically require advanced certifications, apprenticeships, and sometimes additional licensing, and they often offer overtime and union benefits that increase overall compensation.

Do union construction workers get paid more?

Union construction workers typically earn higher wages than non-union workers due to negotiated pay scales, benefits, and job protections established through collective bargaining. They often receive additional compensation for overtime, hazardous conditions, and specialized skills, making their overall pay generally higher in the industry.

Carpenter / Skilled Craft Worker — Build From the Ground Up with a Premier Ohio Valley Contractor

Job Overview

Company: Grae-Con Construction, Inc.

Location: Steubenville, OH / Ohio Valley region

Travel: Regional project travel required, typically within the surrounding Ohio Valley market

Employment Type: Full-Time

Pay Range: $28–$35+ per hour, based on experience

Project Types: Commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, government/federal, renovation, ground-up, concrete, carpentry, and union construction projects

Required Licenses / Certifications: None required

Preferred Experience: Union construction, commercial carpentry, concrete/formwork, layout, and self-perform construction

The Opportunity

Grae-Con is seeking a well-rounded Carpenter / Skilled Craft Worker to support commercial and industrial construction projects across the Ohio Valley region.

This is a strong fit for someone who is not limited to one narrow task and enjoys working across multiple phases of a project — from layout and concrete/formwork through general carpentry and finish work.

Grae-Con is especially interested in candidates who bring strong concrete, formwork, and layout experience, along with the ability to support a variety of commercial construction scopes.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Perform skilled carpentry and general craft work on commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, and renovation projects.
  • Support layout, formwork, concrete preparation, slabs, expansion joints, and related structural work.
  • Assist with framing, blocking, backing, doors, hardware, millwork, and interior carpentry as needed.
  • Work safely and productively in active jobsites, occupied spaces, phased renovations, and ground-up construction environments.
  • Read and interpret basic drawings, plans, measurements, and jobsite instructions.
  • Coordinate with superintendents, foremen, project managers, and other trades.
  • Help maintain jobsite quality, safety, cleanliness, and production expectations.
  • Use tools, equipment, and materials properly and safely.
  • Adapt to changing project needs and support the crew where needed.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a versatile commercial carpenter or skilled craft worker with strong field experience and a willingness to work across multiple types of construction tasks.

Grae-Con is especially interested in candidates with experience in:

  • Commercial carpentry.
  • Concrete formwork.
  • Civil / site concrete support.
  • Layout.
  • Slabs and expansion joints.
  • General building construction.
  • Renovations and ground-up work.
  • Commercial, industrial, school, healthcare, or government projects.

This role is not limited to finish carpentry or steel studs/drywall. Candidates who can work from early-stage construction through later-stage carpentry will be the strongest fit.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in commercial carpentry, concrete, formwork, or related skilled construction work.
  • Ability to work safely and productively on active commercial jobsites.
  • Ability to read measurements, follow drawings, and complete work according to project requirements.
  • Comfort using standard construction tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to support the team where needed.
  • Ability to follow superintendent, foreman, and safety direction.
  • Willingness to work across Grae-Con’s regional project footprint in the Ohio Valley.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Union construction experience.
  • Experience with form carpentry, concrete, slabs, expansion joints, layout, or civil work.
  • Experience using layout tools or total station equipment.
  • Experience on commercial, industrial, healthcare, school, or government projects.
  • Ability to support both rough and finish carpentry.
  • Background with self-performing general contractors.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
  • Willingness to enter or work within a union environment, if applicable.

Union Environment

Grae-Con operates in a union construction environment.

Union experience is preferred, but candidates from non-union backgrounds may also be considered if they have the right commercial construction skills and are open to working within a union environment.

For craft roles, union requirements may apply depending on the project, trade, and work being performed. Candidates should be comfortable discussing current union status, prior union experience, and openness to joining the appropriate union if needed.

Compensation & Benefits

Grae-Con offers a competitive compensation package, including:

  • Pay range of $30–$35 per hour, based on experience.
  • Health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Project-based travel support or per diem when applicable.
  • Training and safety development opportunities.
  • Long-term career opportunity with an established Ohio Valley contractor.
