Job description

Project Superintendent — Lead Commercial & Industrial Builds Across the Ohio Valley

Job Overview

Company: Grae-Con Construction, Inc.

Location: Steubenville, OH / Ohio Valley region

Travel: Regional project travel required, typically within the surrounding Ohio Valley market

Employment Type: Full-Time

Salary Range: $90,000–$130,000 annually, based on experience

Additional Compensation: Performance bonus and profit sharing eligibility

Project Types: Commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, government/federal, renovation, ground-up, and union construction projects

Required Licenses / Certifications: None required

Preferred Certifications: OSHA 10 or OSHA 30

The Opportunity

Grae-Con is seeking an experienced Project Superintendent to lead field operations across commercial and industrial construction projects throughout the Ohio Valley region.

This is a strong fit for a superintendent who enjoys running the job in the field, coordinating self-perform crews and subcontractors, solving problems before they affect the schedule, and working on a variety of project types rather than one narrow specialty.

Grae-Con has built its reputation on long-term client relationships, repeat business, and a stable, experienced workforce. Many team members have built decades-long careers with the company, and current openings are tied in part to retirements and long-term succession planning.

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Lead daily field operations on commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, government, and renovation projects.
  • Coordinate self-perform crews, subcontractors, vendors, project managers, and client representatives.
  • Maintain jobsite safety, quality, schedule, and production expectations.
  • Review drawings, specifications, schedules, and site conditions to identify issues before they impact progress.
  • Manage day-to-day manpower, materials, equipment, subcontractor activity, and jobsite logistics.
  • Lead toolbox talks, safety coordination, and field communication.
  • Support project managers with schedule updates, field documentation, and issue resolution.
  • Keep projects moving in active, occupied, or phased environments such as schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities.
  • Mentor foremen, assistant superintendents, and field employees as part of Grae-Con’s long-term team culture.

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is a hands-on field leader with strong commercial construction experience and the ability to run small-to-mid-sized projects independently.

Grae-Con is especially interested in candidates who have experience with:

  • Commercial general contracting.
  • Self-perform construction environments.
  • Managing both internal craft labor and subcontractors.
  • Projects typically ranging from approximately $3M–$6M, with some larger projects in the $12M–$20M range.
  • Renovations, additions, ground-up construction, and occupied-space projects.
  • Hospitals, schools, industrial buildings, foundations, and pre-engineered metal buildings.
  • Coordinating work in union construction environments.

Required Qualifications

  • 7–10+ years of construction field leadership experience.
  • Superintendent experience in commercial, industrial, institutional, or similar construction environments.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, and jobsite documentation.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors, vendors, field crews, and project managers.
  • Strong understanding of jobsite safety, sequencing, scheduling, manpower planning, and quality control.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with owners, project managers, trades, inspectors, and internal teams.
  • Willingness to work across Grae-Con’s regional project footprint in the Ohio Valley.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with self-performing general contractors.
  • Experience managing union craft labor or working in a union construction environment.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
  • Background in carpentry, concrete, civil, structural, or commercial building construction.
  • Experience in hospitals, schools, industrial facilities, or occupied renovation work.
  • Ability to be hands-on when appropriate, while still leading the overall job as superintendent.
  • Experience with CPM scheduling, look-ahead schedules, and field production tracking.

Union Environment

Grae-Con operates in a union construction environment.

Union experience is preferred, but it is not required for the Project Superintendent role. The right candidate may come from a union or non-union background, as long as they can successfully lead field operations, coordinate craft labor and subcontractors, and work effectively within Grae-Con’s project structure.

Candidates who have experience working with union trades, managing jurisdictional requirements, or leading self-perform crews will be especially relevant.

Compensation & Benefits

Grae-Con offers a competitive compensation package, including:

  • Annual salary range of $90,000–$130,000, based on experience.
  • Performance bonus eligibility.
  • Profit sharing eligibility.
  • Health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Company-provided tools, technology, or equipment as required for the role.
  • Travel support or per diem for applicable regional assignments.
  • Training and safety development opportunities.
