The Learning Specialist supports academic success, persistence, and progression of students across the College by providing individualized, strategy-based academic support and targeted skill development.

Grounded in evidence-based learning science and inclusive instructional practices, the Learning Specialist delivers structured support that helps students strengthen academic skills, develop effective learning strategies, and build independence as learners. This role supports a diverse student population, including those with varying levels of academic preparation and those who benefit from specialized approaches to information processing, organization, and skill acquisition.

Working in close collaboration with the Director of Developmental Education, faculty, and The Accessibility Office, the Learning Specialist contributes to a coordinated, student-centered approach that connects instruction, academic support, and student engagement to improve outcomes and progression into and through college-level coursework. This is a twelve-month, full-time administrative appointment reporting to the Director, Student Academic Success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Support for Diverse Learners and Skill Acquisition

  • Adapt instructional approaches to meet the needs of students with varying levels of academic preparation and learning differences

  • Reinforce skill acquisition through scaffolded instruction, guided practice, and feedback

  • Collaborate, as appropriate, with campus partners to support students receiving accommodations while maintaining alignment with course expectations

  • Help students develop metacognitive awareness of how they learn, enabling them to apply strategies across courses

  • Apply evidence-based teaching modalities that support diverse learners, including students with differing information processing needs

  • Design and implement short-term, goal-oriented learning plans that build student capacity and promote increasing independence

Student Progression and Engagement

  • Assess student learning needs to inform targeted interventions and support plans

  • Engage in proactive outreach, early alert follow-up, and ongoing communication to support student persistence

  • Encourage use of academic support services and reinforce connections between classroom learning and support resources

  • Support students in understanding course expectations and pathways to academic success

Collaboration with Faculty and Academic Support Teams

  • Collaborate with faculty to align learning support strategies with course content, assignments, and learning outcomes

  • Partner with advising, tutoring, and academic support services to ensure a coordinated and consistent student support experience

  • Assist in the development of professional development such as workshops, trainings, to provide support for targeted interventions addressing common academic challenges

  • Contribute to a shared, institution-wide approach to supporting student success

Assessment, Documentation, and Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain accurate documentation of student engagement, progress, and outcomes

  • Monitor the effectiveness of learning strategies and adjust support approaches based on student progress

  • Participate in assessment efforts and contribute to continuous improvement of academic support initiatives

  • Utilize student data and feedback to inform practice and enhance student outcomes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Psychology, or a related field

  • Experience supporting college students with varying levels of academic preparation

  • Knowledge of learning strategies, metacognitive coaching, and evidence-based instructional practices

  • Experience providing individualized academic support, tutoring, coaching, or instruction in a higher education setting

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills with a commitment to inclusive, student-centered support

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with students with learning differences or information processing challenges

  • Familiarity with evidence-based practices that support accelerated learning and academic progression

  • Experience collaborating with faculty and academic support teams to improve student outcomes

  • Experience using early alert systems or student engagement tools to support retention initiatives

  • Ability to work across decentralized teams to provide coordinated student support.

Salary Range $55,660 - $71,153 (commensurate with experience)
