What is lean manufacturing?

Lean manufacturing is a production methodology focused on minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency within manufacturing systems. It aims to deliver high-quality products to customers while using fewer resources, such as time, materials, and labor. Lean principles encourage continuous improvement, employee involvement, and streamlined processes to reduce costs and improve productivity. Popular tools in lean manufacturing include 5S, Kaizen, and Just-In-Time production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time lean manufacturing professional?

To thrive in Full Time Lean Manufacturing, you need a solid understanding of lean principles, process improvement methodologies, and a background in engineering or industrial management. Familiarity with tools like Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5S, and ERP systems, along with relevant certifications such as Lean Six Sigma, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and excellent teamwork and communication skills help drive continuous improvement initiatives. These skills are crucial for reducing waste, increasing efficiency, and maintaining a competitive edge in manufacturing operations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in full time lean manufacturing roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in full-time Lean Manufacturing roles is overcoming resistance to change among team members, as implementing Lean principles often requires altering long-standing processes. Additionally, maintaining consistent communication between cross-functional teams can be difficult, especially when coordinating continuous improvement initiatives. To address these challenges, Lean professionals can prioritize regular training sessions, foster a culture of openness to feedback, and use data-driven approaches to demonstrate the value of process improvements. Collaborating closely with both shop floor staff and management also ensures sustained engagement and successful Lean transformations.

What is the difference between Full Time Lean Manufacturing vs Full Time Production Associate?

AspectFull Time Lean ManufacturingFull Time Production Associate
CertificationsLean Manufacturing, Six Sigma (preferred)None required, but some may have OSHA or safety training
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, focus on process improvementFactory floor, assembly lines, production areas
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing companies implementing lean principlesFactories and production facilities across industries

Full Time Lean Manufacturing roles focus on optimizing production processes and implementing lean principles, often requiring certifications like Six Sigma. In contrast, Full Time Production Associates perform hands-on assembly or manufacturing tasks on the factory floor. Both roles are essential in manufacturing environments but differ in responsibilities and skill requirements.

Position overview

GTI Fabrication is seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Senior Manufacturing Engineer to lead the design, control, and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes in a modular fabrication environment. This individual contributor role focuses on developing scalable, efficient production methods for custom enclosures, containerized systems, and structural steel weldments. The ideal candidate will have deep experience in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Lean Manufacturing, and quality systems such as ISO9001.

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will work cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain to ensure manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance across the product lifecycle

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and optimize manufacturing processes for modular fabricated systems, containerized enclosures, and steel structures.
  • Develop formal manufacturing documentation including process flow diagrams, work instructions, BOMs, routings, CNC programming, and assembly/inspection plans.
  • Use CAD tools (SolidWorks and AutoCAD) to design fixtures, tooling, and work-holding solutions to support scalable production.
  • Translate engineering design requirements into robust and efficient production processes.
  • Lead new product introduction (NPI) efforts from prototype through full-rate production.
  • Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to reduce waste, improve flow, and optimize floor layouts.
  • Integrate automated and digital manufacturing technologies where applicable.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate manufacturability and ensure alignment between engineering intent and production capability.
  • Utilize ERP systems (NetSuite preferred) to manage process documentation and support real-time operations visibility.
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 9001 standards; support internal and external audits.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective action using tools like FMEA, SPC, and 8D.
  • Mentor technicians and junior engineers in best practices for manufacturing engineering.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
  • 8–15 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, preferably in modular fabrication, defense, energy, or industrial equipment sectors.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for 3D modeling, 2D drafting, and tolerance analysis.
  • Strong working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems (NetSuite a plus).
  • Demonstrated success in process development, design for manufacturability, and production scaling.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization, modular product platforms, and structural weldments.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 quality systems and compliance standards.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in containerized HVAC, power distribution, or control system enclosures.
  • Familiarity with CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and industrial coatings.
  • Certification in Lean Six Sigma, PMP, or related process improvement disciplines.
  • Experience with CFD/FEA simulation tools.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a full-time onsite position based in Buffalo, NY.
  • Work takes place in both office and fabrication floor environments.
  • May require up to 5 % travel to customer sites or GTI facilities.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs and walk fabrication areas
