Prototyping Intern information

What does a Prototyping Intern do?

A Prototyping Intern assists in the design, development, and testing of early models or samples of products, often working closely with engineers and designers. Their responsibilities typically include creating physical or digital prototypes, conducting experiments, gathering user feedback, and helping refine product concepts. This role provides hands-on experience with various tools and technologies, and helps interns learn how ideas are transformed into tangible products. Prototyping Interns also gain valuable skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and project management.

What is the difference between Prototyping Intern vs Product Design Intern?

AspectPrototyping InternProduct Design Intern
Required SkillsPrototyping, CAD, basic design toolsDesign, user research, prototyping
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, R&D labsDesign teams, cross-functional teams
Industry UsageTech, manufacturing, consumer productsTech, consumer electronics, software

Prototyping Interns focus primarily on creating physical or digital prototypes to test concepts, often working with CAD or prototyping tools. Product Design Interns have a broader role, including user research, interface design, and overall product development. While both roles involve prototyping skills, Product Design Interns typically engage in a wider range of design activities within product development teams.

What are some common challenges a Prototyping Intern might face during their internship?

As a Prototyping Intern, you may encounter challenges such as rapidly iterating on designs based on feedback, managing multiple project deadlines, and learning to use new fabrication tools or prototyping software. Collaboration with engineers, designers, and product managers is frequent, requiring strong communication skills and adaptability. It's important to stay organized, proactively seek feedback, and be open to learning from both successes and setbacks to make the most of your internship experience.

Job Description

Bosch Corporate Research is looking for a Hardware Prototyping Intern to support the next phase of a project focused on advanced data center rack systems. The intern will help translate a data center rack concept into an early-stage hardware prototype using Bosch components, lab infrastructure, and practical systems-integration methods.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineering student who can work across electrical, mechanical, thermal, controls, and systems interfaces. The intern will collaborate with Bosch researchers and engineers to assemble, instrument, troubleshoot, and document a prototype subsystem or rack-level demonstrator.

The duration of the internship is 4 months, with a target start date of August 10, 2026.

What you will do

  • Review the existing system architecture, requirements, and component recommendations from the previous project phase.
  • Develop a practical build plan for assembling selected Bosch hardware components into an early-stage prototype or subsystem demonstrator.
  • Support integration of power electronics, DC distribution, sensors, controllers, telemetry interfaces, and supporting lab equipment.
  • Assist with mechanical layout, mounting, packaging, thermal/fluidic interfaces, wiring, and test-harness development.
  • Instrument the prototype to collect electrical, thermal, fluidic, and control data.
  • Execute basic checkout procedures, troubleshoot integration issues, and document defects, risks, and recommended design changes.
  • Maintain clear prototype documentation, including bill of materials, wiring/interface diagrams, assembly notes, and test procedures.

Expected deliverables (4 months)

  • Early-stage prototype, subsystem demonstrator, or hardware-in-the-loop test setup using selected Bosch hardware components.
  • Prototype build documentation, including bill of materials, interface diagrams, assembly notes, and lab setup instructions.
  • Initial checkout and test results for key electrical, thermal, control, and telemetry functions.
  • Gap and issue log identifying integration risks and recommended next steps.

Final technical presentation summarizing prototype status, lessons learned, and recommendations.

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, systems engineering, controls engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Hands-on lab experience building, integrating, or testing engineering hardware.
  • Coursework or experience in two or more of: power electronics, DC distribution, embedded systems, controls, telemetry, thermal/fluid systems, mechanical prototyping, instrumentation, or data acquisition.
  • Ability to read technical documentation such as schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, or system requirements.
  • Strong troubleshooting, structured problem-solving, and technical communication skills.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience integrating multidisciplinary hardware systems.
  • Exposure to data center infrastructure, rack-level power distribution, liquid cooling, or high-power systems.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, CAD, microcontrollers, PLCs, or test automation.
  • Familiarity with lab safety practices for electrical, mechanical, or fluidic systems.
