Prototyping Intern information

What does a Prototyping Intern do?

A Prototyping Intern assists in the design, development, and testing of early models or samples of products, often working closely with engineers and designers. Their responsibilities typically include creating physical or digital prototypes, conducting experiments, gathering user feedback, and helping refine product concepts. This role provides hands-on experience with various tools and technologies, and helps interns learn how ideas are transformed into tangible products. Prototyping Interns also gain valuable skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and project management.

What is the difference between Prototyping Intern vs Product Design Intern?

AspectPrototyping InternProduct Design Intern
Required SkillsPrototyping, CAD, basic design toolsDesign, user research, prototyping
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, R&D labsDesign teams, cross-functional teams
Industry UsageTech, manufacturing, consumer productsTech, consumer electronics, software

Prototyping Interns focus primarily on creating physical or digital prototypes to test concepts, often working with CAD or prototyping tools. Product Design Interns have a broader role, including user research, interface design, and overall product development. While both roles involve prototyping skills, Product Design Interns typically engage in a wider range of design activities within product development teams.

What are some common challenges a Prototyping Intern might face during their internship?

As a Prototyping Intern, you may encounter challenges such as rapidly iterating on designs based on feedback, managing multiple project deadlines, and learning to use new fabrication tools or prototyping software. Collaboration with engineers, designers, and product managers is frequent, requiring strong communication skills and adaptability. It's important to stay organized, proactively seek feedback, and be open to learning from both successes and setbacks to make the most of your internship experience.

ASR Group -Tellus is seeking a Tooling Engineering Intern to support the design, prototyping, and testing of molded fiber products. This internship provides hands-on exposure to engineering, manufacturing, and product development in a fast-paced R&D environment.
Under the guidance of the Technical Director and Tooling Engineer, the intern will assist with day-to-day lab and tool shop activities, including CAD support, basic fabrication and inspection tasks, and product testing/documentation.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  • Support Engineering and R&D teams with tooling and molded-fiber product development activities
  • Create, revise, and interpret CAD models/drawings (2D and 3D) with guidance from team members
  • Prepare materials and components for fabrication and prototyping; support shop equipment operation (CNC, 3D printing, and hand tools) under supervision and in accordance with safety requirements
  • Maintain tool shop organization, including materials, tooling components, and consumables
  • Measure and inspect tooling parts for wear, fit, and basic quality requirements; document findings as needed
  • Participate in product testing (fit, strength, performance); record observations and assist with documenting methods and results
  • Support manufacturing trials and production runs by observing processes, identifying visible issues (e.g., defects, misalignment, tooling wear), collecting data, and assisting with basic troubleshooting
  • Collaborate with engineers to incorporate testing and trial feedback into design iterations and continuous improvements
  • Support project, trial, and tooling-change documentation by organizing files/drawings and maintaining accurate revision records (as directed)

WHAT THE INTERN WILL GAIN
  • Exposure to real-world product development and manufacturing processes
  • Hands-on experience with tooling, prototyping methods, and production equipment
  • Opportunity to collaborate across Engineering, Operations, and R&D teams
  • Practical understanding of how product design translates into manufacturable solutions
