Position Overview

The Backflow Inspector and Tester is responsible for inspecting, testing, and documenting backflow prevention assemblies at customer sites throughout Minnesota. This role helps protect public water supplies from contamination in compliance with the Minnesota State Plumbing Code (Chapter 4714) and all applicable local authority requirements. Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect and test backflow prevention assemblies (RPZ, PVB, DC, SVB) at residential, commercial, and industrial customer sites across Minnesota
  • Perform all testing in compliance with Minnesota State Plumbing Code section 603.4.2 and applicable ASSE standards (1015, 1020, 1047, 1048, 1056)
  • Submit completed test reports to local water authorities and/or utility portals (such as BSI Online) within required timeframes
  • Apply physical test tags to each inspected device showing the test date and your license number
  • Identify failing or out-of-tolerance assemblies and clearly document deficiencies in work orders
  • Communicate test results to customers in a clear, professional manner and coordinate follow-up service as needed
  • Maintain accurate records of all inspections, test results, and equipment conditions in company systems
  • Operate and maintain specialized test gauges and equipment; ensure calibration is current
  • Work with the service coordinator to manage your daily route efficiently
  • Stay current on changes to Minnesota plumbing code, local water authority requirements, and ASSE standards

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required but are not necessarily all-inclusive. Candidates who do not yet hold BT certification may be considered if they can demonstrate active progress toward obtaining it.

Required

  • Minnesota DLI Backflow Prevention Tester (BT) certification required to legally test backflow prevention assemblies in Minnesota (or verifiable active pursuit of certification)
  • Current ASSE 5110 certification required by Minnesota DLI as a condition of BT certification
  • Valid drivers license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to read and interpret plumbing diagrams, site plans, and equipment specifications
  • Ability to work independently in the field and manage a daily service route
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years of experience inspecting or testing backflow prevention assemblies
  • Familiarity with local water authority reporting portals (e.g., BSI Online)
  • Experience working in fire protection, plumbing, or mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of fire suppression backflow devices (ASSE 1047 standard)
  • Proficiency with mobile devices and digital tools for submitting reports and work orders
