What is a freelance running coach?

A freelance running coach is a self-employed professional who provides personalized training plans, guidance, and support to runners of all levels. Unlike coaches who work for a specific organization or club, freelance running coaches work independently and may offer their services in person or online. They assess clients' abilities and goals, design customized running programs, monitor progress, and offer advice on technique, nutrition, injury prevention, and motivation. Clients typically hire freelance running coaches to improve performance, prepare for races, or maintain a consistent running routine.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance running coach?

To thrive as a Freelance Running Coach, you need a solid understanding of exercise science, running techniques, and training program design, often supported by certifications such as RRCA or USATF. Familiarity with fitness tracking apps, heart rate monitors, and online coaching platforms is typically required. Strong motivational skills, effective communication, and adaptability help coaches tailor programs and foster client commitment. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering personalized, safe, and effective training that helps clients reach their running goals.

How do freelance running coaches typically structure their client sessions and manage their workload?

Freelance running coaches often tailor their client sessions based on individual goals, experience levels, and available time, usually meeting clients in person or virtually for assessments, training runs, and progress check-ins. They manage their workload by balancing client scheduling, developing personalized training plans, and maintaining communication through emails, messaging apps, or coaching platforms. Since client needs can fluctuate seasonally—like during race preparation periods—coaches must be adaptable and proactive in organizing their calendars and setting boundaries to avoid burnout. Collaboration with other fitness professionals, such as physical therapists or nutritionists, is also common to provide holistic athlete support.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of brand and creative strategies across company-wide marketing channels.

  • Personally produce, shoot, and edit video content using the in-house studio to support marketing campaigns and content needs.

  • Manage, mentor, and directly contribute to the creative team’s output, providing clear feedback and setting creative direction.

Job description

Eightfold is hiring a Creative Director to lead brand and creative company-wide - from visual identity to campaign execution to video production out of our HQ studio. This isn't a role that directs from above. You'll set the creative vision and also do the work: shoot and edit a same-day video, ship a banner ad, give sharp feedback on a designer's draft, all in the same week.
The right candidate has led creative in B2B SaaS for 10+ years and can point to a brand's visual identity they evolved - with business results attached, not just a portfolio refresh. They're a strategist and an operator: comfortable setting go-to-market creative direction one day and operating a camera the next. You'll manage and grow our small creative team, partner with demand gen and product marketing to connect brand to pipeline, and keep our in-house studio running as a production capability we don't have to outsource.
Responsibilities
Vision & strategy
  • Own creative vision for how Eightfold shows up in market - brand, campaigns, product marketing - partnering with VP Brand on positioning and narrative direction.
  • Lead evolution of the visual brand system as the company matures, ensuring consistency from HQ-produced brand assets to close, working with existing design team.

Brand & visual system
  • Steward brand guidelines, visual identity, and design systems across all touchpoints (web, product marketing, sales collateral, campaigns).
  • Drive brand consistency across geographies and functions as team scales.

Video/motion & content production
  • Personally shoot and produce quick-turn video content at HQ using the in-house studio (camera, lighting, podcast setup) - exec interviews, product demos, social clips, culture content.
  • Edit video in-house for fast-turnaround needs; know when to bring in outside editors for higher-production work.
  • Oversee video/motion strategy and production standards for larger campaign or launch assets.
  • Own the studio as a creative asset - keep equipment/workflow running so content can be produced on short notice without waiting on outside vendors.

Web & UX
  • Partner with product/UX and web teams to ensure brand fidelity across the corporate site and digital experiences.
  • Weigh in on UX decisions where they intersect with brand and visual design.

Player/coach execution
  • Manage, mentor, and grow the internal creative team - building out additional hires as scope requires.
  • Roll up sleeves on hands-on design work when needed (campaign assets, social posts, banner ads, event artwork, quick-turn requests) - this is not a pure-management role.
  • Set creative direction and give sharp, specific feedback on team output.

Cross-functional partnership
  • Work closely with demand gen, product marketing, and comms to ensure creative output ties to pipeline and revenue goals, not just aesthetics.
  • Manage external agency/freelance relationships as needed to supplement in-house capacity.

Qualifications
  • 10+ years leading creative function in B2B SaaS (enterprise software preferred).
  • Demonstrated success leading a visual brand evolution/repositioning - must be able to show before/after and business impact, not just portfolio polish.
  • Hands-on video production skill: comfortable operating camera/lighting/audio equipment and editing (Premiere or similar) - not just directing a video team.
  • Player/coach profile: proven people-management experience plus continued hands-on design fluency (can still execute, not just direct).
  • Range across brand identity, campaign/digital creative, video/motion, and web/UX - this is a generalist creative leader, not a single-discipline specialist.
  • Experience partnering with demand gen/product marketing to connect brand to pipeline outcomes.
  • Strong portfolio required, with case studies showing strategic reasoning behind creative decisions, not just final assets.
