How much do freelance running coach jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average hourly pay for freelance running coach in the United States is $40.87, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $37.26 and $44.47 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a freelance running coach?

A freelance running coach is a self-employed professional who provides personalized training plans, guidance, and support to runners of all levels. Unlike coaches who work for a specific organization or club, freelance running coaches work independently and may offer their services in person or online. They assess clients' abilities and goals, design customized running programs, monitor progress, and offer advice on technique, nutrition, injury prevention, and motivation. Clients typically hire freelance running coaches to improve performance, prepare for races, or maintain a consistent running routine.

How do freelance running coaches typically structure their client sessions and manage their workload?

Freelance running coaches often tailor their client sessions based on individual goals, experience levels, and available time, usually meeting clients in person or virtually for assessments, training runs, and progress check-ins. They manage their workload by balancing client scheduling, developing personalized training plans, and maintaining communication through emails, messaging apps, or coaching platforms. Since client needs can fluctuate seasonally—like during race preparation periods—coaches must be adaptable and proactive in organizing their calendars and setting boundaries to avoid burnout. Collaboration with other fitness professionals, such as physical therapists or nutritionists, is also common to provide holistic athlete support.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Running Coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Running Coach, you need a solid understanding of exercise science, running techniques, and training program design, often supported by certifications such as RRCA or USATF. Familiarity with fitness tracking apps, heart rate monitors, and online coaching platforms is typically required. Strong motivational skills, effective communication, and adaptability help coaches tailor programs and foster client commitment. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering personalized, safe, and effective training that helps clients reach their running goals.

Job description

FloSports is the leading digital platform for underserved sports, combining live and on-demand streaming, original programming, data, and technology to help sports grow their audiences and build sustainable businesses, from youth to professional levels. By bringing thousands of events and communities onto one platform, Flo creates scale where none previously existed, connecting passionate fans with the sports they love while giving athletes, organizers, and rights holders the tools to reach and engage a global audience.
Flo streams more than 50,000 live events annually across sports, including motorsports, wrestling, hockey, track & field, cheer, jiu-jitsu, NCAA Division II and III athletics, and more. We're looking for people who are passionate about sports, embody accountability, collaboration, curiosity, positivity, grit, and excellence, and are motivated to help grow and elevate the communities we serve.
THE ROLE:
FloSports is looking for a Content Manager to lead the creative and editorial direction of our cheer and dance vertical brands (Varsity TV, FloCheer, FloDance). This role is equal parts content strategist, people manager and cheer/dance storyteller.
You'll own the day-to-day output of cheer/dance written, video and social content while mentoring and managing a team of cheer/dance content creators. You should know what fans care about before teams hit the mat, understand how content performs across platforms (especially social) and know how to turn live events into must-watch, must-share moments.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Own the creative and editorial strategy for cheer/dance across social, video and written platforms
  • Lead and manage a team of cheer/dance content creators
  • Build content plans around major events, leagues and moments (All Star, college, youth, professional)
  • Drive social-first content creation with a strong emphasis on short-form video, real-time storytelling and social monetization
  • Lead strategic collaboration with Varsity, including running weekly alignment meetings and overseeing all content-related communication and execution during live events
  • Track content performance and translate analytics into actionable insights for your team
  • Assign coverage, manage workloads, and ensure deadlines are consistently met
  • Hire, onboard and manage freelancers and contributors as needed
  • Collaborate with marketing, product, partnerships, rights and sales teams to support company initiatives
  • Ensure all content aligns with FloSports brand standards, voice and editorial guidelines
  • Edit content for clarity, accuracy, tone and quality
  • Act as a player-coach, creating and posting content as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Deep knowledge of cheer/dance culture, leagues and storylines
  • Experience managing content creators in digital or sports media
  • Strong background in social media content strategy, especially video and monetization
  • Excellent editorial judgment and attention to detail
  • Experience using analytics to inform content decisions
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, live-events-driven environment
  • Highly organized, proactive and accountable

OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY:
FloSports exists to elevate the communities, athletes, and sports that have too often been overlooked. That mission starts with our own team. We believe that a diverse, inclusive workplace-one where different perspectives are sought out, heard, and valued-is essential to building a company that can truly serve the full spectrum of sports fans.
We are committed to creating a fair and equitable environment where people from all backgrounds can thrive. To help mitigate bias and expand opportunity, FloSports uses a blind recruiting process that supports more objective, inclusive hiring decisions. We're intentional in our practices because we believe the best ideas and innovations come from teams that reflect the diversity of the world around us.
OUR BENEFITS:
  • Recognized three years in a row as a Top Workplace by the Austin-American Statesman
  • Flexibility at work - you can take control of your profession and personal schedule
  • All-hands events hosted annually in beautiful Austin, Texas
  • Annual equity awards for all top performers
  • Competitive and comprehensive medical, dental and vision plans
  • Peace of mind through company-paid short-term disability, long-term disability and life insurance
  • Generous 401(K) company match vested immediately
  • Progressive parental leave policies
  • Flexible paid time off
  • Hack-a-thons and a full calendar of team-building and social events
  • Company donation to youth teams and leagues that our employees coach
  • Stocked snack bar, catered lunch and breakfast tacos every week
