How much do freelance media planning jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for freelance media planning in the United States is $62.54, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $60.34 and $68.27 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is freelance media planning?

Freelance media planning involves working independently to develop strategies for placing advertisements in various media channels, such as TV, radio, digital, and print. Freelance media planners analyze target audiences, research media consumption habits, and select the most effective platforms and timing for ad campaigns. They often collaborate with clients or agencies, negotiate media buys, and monitor campaign performance, all while managing their own schedules and client relationships. This role requires strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.

How do freelance media planners typically manage client expectations and communication throughout a campaign?

Freelance media planners must proactively manage client expectations by setting clear timelines, deliverables, and performance goals at the outset of each campaign. Regular updates—such as weekly status reports or check-in calls—are crucial for keeping clients informed about progress, adjustments, and results. Since freelancers often juggle multiple clients, strong organizational skills and transparent communication help build trust and ensure smooth collaboration, especially when working remotely or across different time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance media planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Media Planner, you need expertise in media buying and planning, strong analytical abilities, and typically a degree in marketing or communications. Familiarity with media planning tools like Google Ads, Meta Business Suite, and analytics platforms such as Google Analytics is crucial. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and time-management skills help freelancers build client relationships and manage multiple projects effectively. These abilities ensure efficient campaign execution, maximize advertising ROI, and support long-term client satisfaction in a competitive freelance environment.

What is the difference between Freelance Media Planning vs Media Buyer?
