What is freelance media planning?

Freelance media planning involves working independently to develop strategies for placing advertisements in various media channels, such as TV, radio, digital, and print. Freelance media planners analyze target audiences, research media consumption habits, and select the most effective platforms and timing for ad campaigns. They often collaborate with clients or agencies, negotiate media buys, and monitor campaign performance, all while managing their own schedules and client relationships. This role requires strong analytical, communication, and project management skills.

How do freelance media planners typically manage client expectations and communication throughout a campaign?

Freelance media planners must proactively manage client expectations by setting clear timelines, deliverables, and performance goals at the outset of each campaign. Regular updates—such as weekly status reports or check-in calls—are crucial for keeping clients informed about progress, adjustments, and results. Since freelancers often juggle multiple clients, strong organizational skills and transparent communication help build trust and ensure smooth collaboration, especially when working remotely or across different time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance media planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Media Planner, you need expertise in media buying and planning, strong analytical abilities, and typically a degree in marketing or communications. Familiarity with media planning tools like Google Ads, Meta Business Suite, and analytics platforms such as Google Analytics is crucial. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and time-management skills help freelancers build client relationships and manage multiple projects effectively. These abilities ensure efficient campaign execution, maximize advertising ROI, and support long-term client satisfaction in a competitive freelance environment.

What is the difference between Freelance Media Planning vs Media Buyer?

Freelance Media Planning involves developing strategic media plans for clients independently, focusing on research and strategy. Media Buyers execute these plans by purchasing ad space. While both roles require marketing knowledge and certifications, Freelance Media Planners focus on planning and strategy, whereas Media Buyers handle the execution and negotiations.

Job description

Why You'll Never Want to Leave
Respect People. Produce Results.
For more than 35 years, we've built a reputation for both the work we do and how we do it.
Respect shows up in how we work together and with our clients. It means trusting people to do their jobs, giving them the space to do it well, and holding each other to a high standard. Because when people are respected, they do better work, work that grows businesses, shapes culture, and builds relationships that last. And just as important, they have the support to build a career and a life worth investing in.
About the Role
RPA is seeking an experienced Freelance Media Supervisor to support our Client Orchestration team across a variety of accounts and projects.
This role is ideal for a media professional with strong experience in broadcast, local market planning, and digital media who can quickly integrate into existing teams and provide hands-on support across planning, activation, and day-to-day account needs. The ideal candidate is flexible, detail-oriented, collaborative, and comfortable managing multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support the development of integrated media plans across broadcast, video, digital, audio, and other media channels.
  • Assist with annual planning initiatives, including CY27 planning and marketplace analyses.
  • Contribute to local market planning efforts by evaluating market opportunities, audience insights, and media investment strategies.
  • Help prepare media recommendations, planning documents, presentations, and client deliverables.
  • Create and manage job orders, media specifications, flowcharts, and supporting planning materials.
  • Coordinate with strategy, investment, analytics, and activation teams to ensure plans move efficiently from development through execution.
  • Assist with media authorizations, budget tracking, and campaign set-up processes.
  • Input media buys and maintain planning data within agency systems and tools (Prisma OMNI, Media Tools, etc).
  • Support campaign launches, pacing reviews, reporting, and optimization discussions.
  • Jump into a variety of projects as needed and provide additional bandwidth across the team.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of media agency experience.
  • Strong broadcast planning experience, including linear television and video.
  • Experience with local market planning and media strategy.
  • Solid understanding of digital media channels and integrated planning.
  • Experience developing and managing multiple media plans simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with media buying processes, job orders, media specifications, authorizations, and agency systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.

Ideal Candidate
  • Strong foundation in broadcast and local market media planning.
  • Able to step into active businesses and contribute immediately.
  • Highly organized with excellent follow-through.
  • Comfortable balancing multiple workstreams at once.
  • Collaborative, flexible, and willing to support wherever needed.
  • Experience with automotive, travel, hospitality, or retail categories is a plus.
  • Familiarity with: Media Tools, eTelmar, Media Rader/Polk, Excel, Copilot, iSpot, OMNI

What we're really looking for: Someone who can quickly add bandwidth to the team by helping with planning, documentation, media buildouts, local market recommendations, job orders, specs, and buy entry. This is less about managing people and more about being a strong media practitioner who can jump in and help move work forward wherever needed.
We are unable to offer employment visa assistance for this role.
Consistent with applicable law, compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position. The Company reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time.
As an Equal Opportunity Employer, at RPA we hire without consideration to race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, disability, or any other classification protected by federal, state, or local law.
