Freelance Development information

What is freelance development?

Freelance development refers to software development work done independently by individuals, rather than as a full-time employee of a company. Freelance developers are typically self-employed and take on projects for various clients, working remotely or on-site as needed. They may specialize in web development, mobile app development, or other programming areas, and manage their own schedules, contracts, and payments. This career path offers flexibility and variety, but also requires strong self-management and business skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance developer?

To thrive as a Freelance Developer, you need strong programming skills, a solid grasp of software development principles, and a portfolio showcasing relevant experience, often supported by a degree or certifications in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and popular frameworks or languages (e.g., JavaScript, Python, React) is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for managing client relationships and meeting deadlines independently. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality work, maintaining client satisfaction, and sustaining a successful freelance career.

What are some common challenges freelance developers face when managing multiple projects, and how can they be addressed?

Freelance developers often juggle several projects at once, which can lead to challenges like managing deadlines, communicating with different clients, and maintaining consistent code quality. To address these issues, effective time management tools, clear communication practices, and robust project tracking systems are essential. Regular check-ins with clients, setting realistic expectations, and using version control platforms can help ensure smooth project delivery and client satisfaction.

This role offers significant creative autonomy and visibility across the business. You'll be trusted to take ambiguous, high-priority needs from initial concept through polished execution, while helping shape how the Degreed brand evolves.

We're looking for someone with exceptional design craft, high standards, strong business judgment, and genuine curiosity about where creative work is headed. You'll work across multiple tools, formats, and channels with an AI-first mindset. Motion design is a bonus, especially if you can bring static ideas to life through animation, video, or simple storytelling sequences.

Key Skills
  • 7+ years of experience in brand, marketing, digital, or graphic design, with increasing ownership of complex, high-visibility creative work.
  • A high-caliber portfolio demonstrating exceptional craft across brand identity, integrated campaigns, digital experiences, and marketing communications.
  • Significant experience creating executive and board-level presentations, with the ability to translate complex or sensitive business information into clear, compelling visual stories.
  • Experience developing creative for major events, including environmental graphics, digital experiences, presentation content, and supporting campaign assets.
  • Proven ability to extend a central creative concept across social, web, product marketing, sales enablement, presentations, and other digital and physical touchpoints.
  • Experience partnering directly with senior executives and navigating high-stakes, highly visible work with confidence, discretion, and strong creative judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to take an ambiguous business need from early concept through polished, production-ready execution.
  • Mastery of design fundamentals, including typography, layout, hierarchy, imagery, and composition, with an uncompromising eye for detail.
  • A sophisticated understanding of brand systems and the ability to apply and evolve them consistently across diverse platforms.
  • Expertise in Figma, Adobe Creative Cloud, and modern presentation tools.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating AI into real creative workflows, including concept development, image or video generation, rapid exploration, and production.
  • The judgment to evaluate, refine, and elevate AI-generated output so the final work remains distinctive, on-brand, and held to a high creative standard.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborative inputs while maintaining quality and moving work forward at pace.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain creative decisions, receive constructive feedback, and respectfully challenge a direction when it will lead to a stronger outcome.
Nice-to-Have Skills
  • A proven track record of contributing to rebrands, visual identity shifts, or comprehensive brand refreshes.
  • Proficiency in motion design, animation, video production, or storyboarding.
  • Hands-on experience with After Effects and Premiere Pro, along with AI-powered creative tools such as Midjourney, Runway, Adobe Firefly, ChatGPT, or Claude.
  • Experience creating high-impact work for demand generation, product launches, executive communications, global events, or brand awareness campaigns.
  • Strong familiarity with user experience principles, responsive web design, and digital design best practices.
