Job Summary


The Field Operations Manager of the Rental Business is the equivalent of a General Superintendent in the mechanical contractor and steamfitter industries. This role carries full ownership of every job from initial quote through successful commissioning and is the single point of accountability for field execution, project delivery, and customer satisfaction across all active jobs. This is a senior leadership position with a defined advancement path to President & Sales Director.


Overall Responsibility


The Field Operations Manager serves as the operational hub between the President and the field operations. They own the complete job lifecycle including quoting, installation planning, vendor and subcontractor coordination, emergency response, and new asset build projects. They work in close partnership with the Asset Manager to deploy the right personnel and equipment to every job and serve as the primary customer-facing contact from contract execution through project closeout.


The President remains actively available to the Field Operations Manager as a resource on major accounts, complex customer situations, and strategic decisions. The Field Operations Manager is expected to operate with a high degree of independence and ownership on day-to-day job execution, engaging the President when the situation warrants senior relationship involvement or strategic direction.


This role requires deep hands-on technical knowledge of boiler and steam systems, the credibility to direct mechanics, fabricators, and installation crews in the field, and the organizational ability to manage multiple concurrent projects across the NYC, Metro, and Tri-State area.


Duties and Responsibilities


Quoting & Estimating

  • Prepare detailed, accurate quotes for emergency rental jobs, planned installations, and new construction projects.
  • Conduct site surveys and assessments to inform scope, labor, and material estimates.
  • Collaborate with the President on pricing strategy and margin targets.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of current material, labor, and subcontractor costs in the NYC Metro market.


Installation & Field Coordination

  • Plan and coordinate all boiler installations, de-installations, and commissioning activities.
  • Manage and direct installation vendors and subcontractors, ensuring work is performed safely, on schedule, and to Mobile Steam's quality standards.
  • Work with the Asset Manager to schedule mechanics, fabricators, and crew members for active jobs.
  • Serve as the senior technical authority on site when required.
  • Ensure all field work complies with applicable NYC, NYS, and Tri-State area codes and safety regulations.


Emergency Response

  • Serve as the primary coordinator for emergency boiler rental requests, ensuring rapid mobilization of equipment and personnel.
  • Maintain readiness protocols and on-call coordination with the asset and field teams.
  • Communicate proactively with customers during emergency situations, managing expectations and providing regular updates.


New Asset Build Projects

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of new trailer boiler room build projects from specification through completion.
  • Manage vendors, fabricators, and internal resources across all phases of new asset construction.
  • Track project budgets, timelines, and milestones; report progress to the President.
  • Ensure new assets meet all regulatory, safety, and operational standards prior to fleet entry.


Permitting & Compliance (Job-Level)

  • Coordinate with the Operations Manager / VP of Operations on job specific permitting; including DoB, DoT, and other applicable authorities.
  • Coordinate with the Operations Manager / VP of Operations on fleet-wide permitting and compliance matters.
  • Ensure all active job sites are operating within regulatory requirements at all times.


Customer & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the primary point of contact for customers from job award through project closeout.
  • Maintain a professional, service-oriented presence that reflects Mobile Steam's reputation for quality and reliability.
  • Address and resolve customer concerns promptly and effectively.
  • Engage the President on major account relationships, high-stakes situations, and new business development conversations as appropriate.
  • Support the President with site walk-throughs and pre-sales technical consultations as needed.


Reporting & Administration

  • Maintain accurate job records, installation documentation, and project files.
  • Provide regular project status updates to the President.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager / VP of Operations on contract administration and billing accuracy for active jobs.
  • Work with the Administrative Secretary on job folder management, permit documentation, and customer correspondence.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in boiler maintenance, steam systems, or a closely related mechanical trade; steam-fitting, HVAC, or industrial piping backgrounds considered.
  • Demonstrated field experience with both high and low pressure steam boilers and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Proven experience managing installations, coordinating subcontractors, and overseeing field crews.
  • Experience in estimating and quoting mechanical contracting preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of NYC and NYS boiler codes, safety regulations, and permitting requirements.
  • OSHA 30 required
  • Valid driver's license; ability to travel to job sites throughout the NYC Metro / Tri-State area.
  • Must maintain personal vehicle insurance meeting company requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with project management or ERP tools a plus.
  • Physical Requirements
  • Ability to access and inspect boiler rooms, mechanical spaces, and active job sites.
  • Able to work in confined spaces and climb ladders.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must pass a drug screening and background check prior to employment (at company's expense).
