Job description

Overview: Fireplace Mike is seeking a Gas Fireplace Service Technician to join our small, skilled team serving Akron, Ohio and the surrounding areas. In this role, you’ll work independently in the field while enjoying the support of a close-knit crew. You will help keep homes cozy and safe by servicing and installing gas fireplaces and related hearth products. We offer flexible opportunities (full-time, part-time, or seasonal) and will train the right person – NFI certification is preferred but not required. If you’re a reliable problem-solver who takes pride in quality workmanship and friendly customer service, we’d love to hear from you!

Key Responsibilities:
  • Service & Repair: Perform fireplace service and maintenance calls – including cleaning, diagnostics, and repairs on gas, wood, and pellet fireplaces/stoves, ensuring each unit operates safely and according to manufacturer specifications
Troubleshoot ignition systems, gas line issues, venting problems, and electrical components, then repair or replace parts as needed to resolve issues
  • Installation & Startups: Install and set up new fireplaces or retrofit components (e.g. log sets, inserts, blowers) in existing units. Test all installations and initiate start-ups, making sure each fireplace runs properly. Provide homeowners with clear instructions on operation and maintenance for their new or serviced fireplace and answer any questions to put them at ease.
  • Customer Service: Communicate with customers in a friendly, professional manner at all times. Call ahead to confirm appointments and arrival times. Upon job completion, explain the work you performed and any recommendations (always aiming for “one visit, one fix” solutions). Maintain a professional image and a commitment to total customer satisfaction on every job.
  • Safety & Compliance: Always follow OSHA guidelines and company safety procedures. Perform work to meet local building codes and manufacturer requirements. This includes safely working on ladders or roofs when necessary and using proper precautions when dealing with gas connections, electricity, and open flames.
  • Team Coordination: Work closely with our dispatcher/office manager to handle scheduling and parts ordering. Assist in resolving any scheduling or product issues by providing clear information back to the team. Even though you’ll often be solo on-site, you’re part of a team – so keep the communication lines open and support your teammates as needed.
  • Vehicle & Tool Maintenance: Keep your assigned company van clean, stocked, and in good working order. Operate the company vehicle safely and responsibly at all times. Notify management of any maintenance needs and help coordinate routine service for the van
Take care of your tools and equipment, ensuring you have what you need for each job.
  • Additional Duties: At Fireplace Mike, we all wear multiple hats. Be ready to jump in on related tasks when needed – this could mean assisting with light plumbing or electrical hook-ups for fireplace installations, helping out on a showroom remodeling project, performing minor repairs around the shop, or even lending a hand with general building upkeep. In a small company, everyone’s flexibility counts (for example, some hearth companies even have techs assist with plumbing, carpentry or tile work when needed. Your willingness to tackle a variety of tasks will be highly valued.
