Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to join our finance team. This role will oversee two accounting staff members (including Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions) and report directly to the company President. The Financial Controller will play a key hands-on role in day-to-day accounting operations while providing leadership and guidance to the experienced team as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform monthly close processes, including accruals, journal entries, reconciliations, and internal audits.
  • Manage general ledger activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
  • Oversee invoicing, billing, accounts receivable, and accounts payable processes.
  • Monitor cash flow, prepare forecasts, and support budgeting activities.
  • Assist with tax preparation, compliance, and reporting.
  • Handle contract administration and project management, including review of service contracts and job costing.
  • Supervise, mentor, and coach two accounting team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team environment.
  • Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies, acting as a proactive problem solver.
  • Prepare financial reports and analysis for management.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive financial information.
  • Contribute to process improvements and move with speed in a fast-paced service industry setting.
  • Oversee payroll processing for hourly and salaried employees, ensuring accurate calculation of wages, overtime, deductions, bonuses, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Review and approve bi-weekly or semi-monthly payroll runs, reconcile payroll liabilities, and coordinate with HR on employee changes, timekeeping, and benefits deductions.
  • Manage payroll-related general ledger postings, accruals (e.g., PTO, bonuses), and reporting, while supervising accounting staff in payroll data entry and reconciliation tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong background in general ledger, financial reporting, and reconciliations.
  • Experience in the trade, construction, or service industry (e.g., mechanical/HVAC services) strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (experience with Great Plains/Dynamics GP a plus).
  • Proven supervisory or leadership experience, with the ability to coach and develop staff.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality, teamwork, and integrity.
