Facilities Supervisor

About Boston College and the Office of Residential Life

Boston College is a Division One university with approximately 9,500 undergraduate students (7,700 residential), located on 118 acres in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, a beautiful suburb seven miles from the center of Boston. Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863, Boston College has strong Jesuit Catholic educational values, which are used as a foundation for our work with and care for students.

The mission of the Office of Residential Life is to create a respectful, healthy, and safe living community for our residents. We are committed to integrating the Ignatian tradition into the formation of each student by connecting their intellectual, ethical, religious, and spiritual lives through a myriad of programs and services. Our role in this formational development is achieved by promoting the academic mission, encouraging responsible and ethical behaviors, engaging residents in conversations regarding diversity, and creating safe, well-managed learning environments where students can seek the greater good.
Under the leadership of the Associate Vice President and Director of Residential Education and Director of Operations, the department consists of 40 professional staff members, 22 graduate positions, 192 RAs, and 20 additional student employees.

Basic Function and Responsibility
The Facilities Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all residential life facilities are properly furnished and maintained throughout the calendar year. The day-to-day responsibilities include responding to student furniture work order requests, inventory, and the replacement of residence hall furnishings. The Facilities Supervisor provides training and supervision to 15-20 student workers and coordinates the daily work schedules of all facilities area student workers.  As part of a team conducting routine inspections of residential spaces and ensuring the preparation of the residence halls for occupancy throughout the year, including the preparation of guest and emergency spaces,  the Facilities Supervisor assists in the identification of safety & maintenance concerns and the communication of the same to the work order center, appropriate supervisors, and the Resident Directors.

Primary Areas of Responsibility

  • The Facilities Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of all furniture contained in the university's over 7,700 student bed spaces, in addition to staff apartments, common areas, and lounges.
  • Perform comprehensive inspections of facilities, and ensure all rooms are properly furnished, equipped, and ready for occupancy, for both the academic semesters as well as summer student and conference groups.
  • The Facilities Supervisor assists with maintaining accurate inventory data of items in the off-site warehouse and storage locations within the residence halls and provides recommendations to their supervisor for Residence Hall areas that need upgrades, new furniture, or improvements.
  • Takes in deliveries of large furniture orders and installation of furniture in student rooms, lounges, and other areas; cuts and hangs shades; changes furniture inserts, and performs light furniture refurbishing/refinishing as needed.
  • Collaborate with campus partners and external vendors to report, address, and execute events related to the Residence Halls.
  • Submit necessary work orders and process work orders from students on a timely basis that pertain to residence hall furniture/blinds.
  • Facility Supervisors provide training and supervision to designated student workers.
  • Coordinate the daily work schedules and assist with interviewing and selection of Residential Life facilities student workers.
  • The Facilities Supervisors are expected to be available to respond to facilities emergencies in the residence halls and support short and medium-term relocations of students in the event of a room becoming uninhabitable.
  • Flexible schedule necessary to accommodate emergency situations or off-hours furniture deliveries.
  • Some weekends are required during move-in and move-out periods and regular weekend shifts during the summer months.
  • The duties and responsibilities outlined in the role description are a good reflection of the role. However, there are responsibilities that may not be explicitly included, and there will be times when the role will need to adapt and assume other duties to support our students and the university and division's strategic initiatives.

Each staff member is expected to contribute to the greater goals of the division and the university.  These contributions (outside of your primary work area) may include supporting division and university-wide initiatives, staffing events, and serving on committees as needed. Some of this work may take place on weekends and outside of normal business hours.
Hiring Range: 22.07/hr to 27.57/hr. Pay rate commensurate with relevant experience.
