What is experiential learning?

Experiential learning is an approach to education that emphasizes learning through direct experience and reflection. Instead of just listening to lectures or reading textbooks, learners actively participate in hands-on activities, real-world projects, or simulations. This method helps students develop practical skills, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the material. Experiential learning can take place in classrooms, workplaces, or community settings, and is widely used in schools, universities, and corporate training programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an experiential learning coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Experiential Learning Coordinator, you need a background in education or instructional design, strong organizational skills, and experience with program development. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), project management tools, and assessment methods is common, and certifications in education or training are often preferred. Strong communication, creativity, and relationship-building abilities help facilitate partnerships and create engaging learning experiences. These skills ensure effective program delivery, meaningful learner engagement, and successful collaboration with stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in experiential learning roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in experiential learning roles often encounter challenges such as ensuring that hands-on activities align with learning objectives, engaging participants with diverse backgrounds, and managing logistics for off-site or real-world experiences. Addressing these challenges involves thorough planning, clear communication with stakeholders, and flexibility to adapt activities based on participant feedback. Collaboration with faculty, industry partners, and support staff is also key to creating meaningful and impactful learning experiences.

Job Summary

The Health Professions Career and Experiential Learning Advisor is a full-time professional staff member in the Career Center, created as part of a five-year pilot initiative to strengthen support for students pursuing mental health and other health professions. Reporting to the Career Center Dean, the Advisor is an integral member of the Career Center team, providing individualized career advising alongside a specialized portfolio in internship development, career coaching, and postgraduate advising for pre-health and mental-health-interested students across Lawrenceโ€™s academic programs.

The Health Professions Career Advisor and Experiential Learning Advisor builds and sustains relationships with local and regional healthcare organizations, mental health providers, and other internship hosts to expand studentsโ€™ access to meaningful experiential learning opportunities. Through oneโ€‘onโ€‘one coaching, workshops, and proactive outreach, the Advisor helps students develop the skills, professional networks, and confidence needed to pursue internships, employment, and graduate or professional study in healthโ€‘related fields.

This position reflects Lawrence Universityโ€™s commitment to equitable access to career development. Students pursuing health professions often face distinct barriers โ€” limited professional networks, lack of specialized career coaching, and financial constraints โ€” and this role is designed to address them directly.

  • Serve as the primary coordinator for health professions experiential learning, identifying, cultivating, and stewarding partnerships with local and regional healthcare organizations, mental health providers, clinics, and other internship hosts to expand internship capacity across pre-health fields.
  • Develop and oversee internships and practicums for students interested in mental health and allied health careers, managing the full lifecycle from partner agreement through student application and placement, supervision checkโ€‘ins, and postโ€‘internship/practicum evaluation.
  • Build and maintain a structured pipeline of internship and experiential learning opportunities, including tracking host capacity, renewal timelines, and siteโ€‘specific requirements.
  • Connect students with alumni mentors and professionals in healthcare and related fields; organize networking events and industryโ€‘insight programming.
  • Help coordinate financial support for students in unpaid or underpaid healthโ€‘related internships, including funding for professional attire, transportation, and relocation, in accordance with program budget guidelines.
Pre-Health Advising and Coordination
  • Provide specialized oneโ€‘onโ€‘one career advising to pre-health and mental-health-interested students, including resume and interview preparation tailored to clinical and health-related settings, workplace culture education, and networking guidance.
  • Advise students on the postgraduate application process for pre-health and mental health graduate and professional programs, including timelines, required experiences, and personal statement development.
  • Design and lead career workshops specific to healthcare and mental health professions, including programming in Lawrenceโ€™s Pre-Health Commons.
  • Partner with academic departments (e.g., Psychology, Biology), pre-health advising committee, and campus offices supporting pre-health students to coordinate pre-health advising services and avoid duplication of services. As institutional needs evolve, this position may assume additional coordination or leadership responsibilities related to pre-health advising.
  • Coordinate and maintain Career Centerโ€‘managed web content and studentโ€‘facing information related to health professions for prospective students, current students, and alumni, in partnership with the pre-health advising committee.
  • Maintain accurate advising records and participate in Career Centerโ€‘wide outcomes reporting, assessment, and staff meetings.
Assessment and Campus Collaboration
  • Track and report on student/alumni outcomes, including internship participation, skill development, job placement, and graduate/professional school acceptance; gather feedback from students and employer partners to continuously improve the program.
  • Represent the Career Center at university events and campus partner meetings as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated coaching, advising, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships that promote student growth and confidence.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain external partnerships with employers, healthcare organizations, or community partners.
  • Knowledge of career development theory, appreciative advising, or related developmental coaching approaches.
  • Familiarity with pre-health/pre-graduate advising processes, application timelines, and admissions requirements a plus.
  • Strong presentation, workshop facilitation, and oneโ€‘onโ€‘one advising skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a caseload of students alongside employer and partner relationship management.
  • Experience and demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive practice and working effectively with diverse student populations, including but not limited to firstโ€‘generation students, international students, students with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ students, AAPI and BIPOC students, and students from a variety of cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Commitment to equitable access to career development resources for students facing financial or professionalโ€‘network barriers.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Familiarity with, or the ability to quickly learn, student success and career technologies such as Handshake/Symplicity, Navigate360, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, and related platforms.
  • Appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education and Lawrence Universityโ€™s commitment to intellectual curiosity, creativity, exploration, and student development.
Education and Work Experience Required Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience in career advising, counseling, coaching, healthcare workforce development, or related studentโ€‘facing higher education work.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masterโ€™s degree in higher education, counseling, health administration, or related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in higher education, preferably in career advising, health professions advising, or related direct student support roles.
  • Experience building and maintaining employer or healthcare partnerships.
  • Experience advising students on preโ€‘health or preโ€‘graduate program applications.
Commitment to Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

Lawrence University is committed to fostering an inclusive campus where all students can thrive. We encourage applications from individuals who will contribute to this mission through their experiences, perspectives, and demonstrated commitment to supporting student success across diverse populations.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss how their experiences and practices contribute to creating equitable and inclusive environments that support student learning, belonging, persistence, and achievement.
