Job description

Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Director of Sports will be responsible for all facets of the sports programs. This includes, but is not limited to, the supervision and direct involvement of youth and adult sports programs. The Director of Sports will be responsible for the development and administration of the department, program development and marketing promotion, implementation and evaluation, staff scheduling and supervision and financial operation in accordance with Center and Association goals, objectives and policies. The Director of Sports will directly supervise Sports part-time staff and sports program volunteers.  Candidates must understand their role in helping build relationships and a small community atmosphere among our members.

  • Designated as a First Responder in the event of an emergency.
  • Develops, administers and controls the designated budgets, including meeting income targets and expense control, in consultation with Center Associate Executive Director.
  • Oversees, the selection, training, and supervising department staff and volunteers.
  • Interprets Association goals, objectives and policies to the community and constituency.
  • Evaluates programs and recommends changes based on compatibility with the Center and Association goals.  Is responsible for the development of new program thrusts.
  • Guides assigned center committees in formulating policies and programs consistent with Center and Association goals.
  • Shares responsibilities for Center supervision, public relations, planning and promotions as agreed.
  • Assists the international aspect of the Association including World Service education and fundraising.
  • Responsible for performance management, of direct reports and oversees the evaluation process of other departmental staff at least on annual basis.
  • Supervises and is accountable for care and maintenance of department equipment and facilities.
  • Shares responsibility for providing income through membership fees and special subsidies.
  • Assists and participates in the Annual Campaign.
  • Schedules department facilities to assure equitable usage of facilities.
  • Directs and organizes department program activities and prepares reports as assigned.
  • Assists and participates with any other projects or activities as may be assigned.

  • This position requires a BA/BS degree in child development, recreation, elementary education or related field, or its equivalent in related experience.
  • Must have a minimum of 3-5 years professional experience in YMCA or similar agency.  Applicant must have basic programming skills with special emphasis on youth and family activities and volunteer recruitment. 
  • The ability to relate to all age groups is essential. 
  • Experience with volunteers, fiscal management, and program development is also important.
