How much do executive controller jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for executive controller in the United States is $91,145.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $68,500.00 and $112,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Executive Controllers?

Executive Controllers are senior financial professionals responsible for overseeing an organization's accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. They play a key role in developing financial strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing accurate financial data for decision-making. Typically, Executive Controllers manage accounting teams, coordinate audits, and work closely with other executives to support the organization's overall financial health. Their expertise is essential for risk management, budgeting, and strategic planning within a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Executive Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Executive Controller, you need extensive experience in financial management, accounting principles, and a degree in finance or accounting, often supported by CPA or CMA certification. Mastery of ERP systems, financial reporting software, and advanced Excel skills are typically required. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and strategic support for organizational growth.

Who is higher, CFO or controller?

In an organization, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is higher than the controller. The CFO oversees all financial functions, including strategic planning and reporting, while the controller manages accounting operations and financial reporting. The controller typically reports to the CFO or finance director.

What does an executive controller do?

An executive controller is responsible for overseeing an organization’s financial reporting, accounting operations, and internal controls. They prepare financial statements, ensure compliance with regulations, and often lead budgeting and forecasting processes, typically using accounting software and requiring strong leadership and analytical skills.

Is a controller above a VP?

In most organizations, an Executive Controller is a senior finance role responsible for overseeing accounting and financial reporting, and it typically reports to a CFO or senior leadership. A Vice President (VP) is a higher-level executive position that may oversee multiple departments, including finance, and often has broader strategic responsibilities. Therefore, a controller is generally below a VP in organizational hierarchy, but this can vary depending on the company's size and structure.

How does an Executive Controller typically collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting?

An Executive Controller works closely with department heads across the organization, such as operations, sales, and human resources, to gather accurate financial data and ensure compliance with internal policies. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to review budgets, discuss financial forecasts, and address any discrepancies in reporting. By fostering strong interdepartmental relationships, the Executive Controller helps ensure transparency, supports informed decision-making, and maintains the integrity of financial information. Effective communication and a proactive approach are key to managing these cross-functional partnerships.

What is the difference between Executive Controller vs Financial Controller?

AspectExecutive ControllerFinancial Controller
CredentialsCPA or CMA often preferredCPA or CMA often preferred
Work EnvironmentStrategic leadership, executive meetingsOperational finance, reporting, compliance
Employer & Industry UsageLarge corporations, multinational firmsMid to large companies, various industries
Primary FocusStrategic financial planning & oversightFinancial reporting & internal controls

While both roles require strong financial expertise and similar credentials, the Executive Controller focuses on strategic financial leadership at the executive level, whereas the Financial Controller handles day-to-day financial operations and reporting. The Executive Controller is more involved in high-level planning and decision-making, often working closely with the CFO and executive team, while the Financial Controller ensures accurate financial statements and compliance within the organization.

What jobs make $1,000,000 a year?

Executive controllers typically do not earn $1,000,000 annually; high executive roles such as CEOs, investment bankers, hedge fund managers, and certain top-tier entrepreneurs are more likely to reach this income level. These positions often require extensive experience, advanced skills, and significant responsibility, with compensation including salary, bonuses, and equity.
