Executive Controller information

What is an executive controller?

Executive Controllers are senior financial professionals responsible for overseeing an organization's accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. They play a key role in developing financial strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing accurate financial data for decision-making. Typically, Executive Controllers manage accounting teams, coordinate audits, and work closely with other executives to support the organization's overall financial health. Their expertise is essential for risk management, budgeting, and strategic planning within a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive controller?

To thrive as an Executive Controller, you need extensive experience in financial management, accounting principles, and a degree in finance or accounting, often supported by CPA or CMA certification. Mastery of ERP systems, financial reporting software, and advanced Excel skills are typically required. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and strategic support for organizational growth.

How does an executive controller typically collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting?

An Executive Controller works closely with department heads across the organization, such as operations, sales, and human resources, to gather accurate financial data and ensure compliance with internal policies. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to review budgets, discuss financial forecasts, and address any discrepancies in reporting. By fostering strong interdepartmental relationships, the Executive Controller helps ensure transparency, supports informed decision-making, and maintains the integrity of financial information. Effective communication and a proactive approach are key to managing these cross-functional partnerships.

The successful candidate will partner closely with senior executive leadership to drive financial integrity, strengthen accounting operations, improve processes and controls, and support the continued growth and evolution of the organization.

Why This Opportunity?

This is more than a traditional Corporate Controller role.

The successful executive will have the opportunity to influence enterprise-wide financial strategy, strengthen accounting operations, develop high-performing teams, lead transformation initiatives, and serve as a trusted business partner to executive leadership.

The organization offers a highly competitive executive compensation package and substantial relocation support for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead corporate accounting and financial reporting activities.
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Direct consolidated financial reporting across multiple business entities.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, SOX, internal controls, and corporate accounting policies.
  • Lead technical accounting research, policy development, and implementation.
  • Oversee treasury operations, cash management, payroll, accounts payable, fixed assets, and general accounting functions.
  • Manage complex consolidations, intercompany accounting, foreign currency transactions, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Partner with internal and external auditors to ensure successful audit execution and regulatory compliance.
  • Identify and implement accounting process improvements, automation, and operational efficiencies.
  • Develop, mentor, and lead a high-performing accounting and finance organization.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on strategic financial initiatives and enterprise business planning.
  • Support accounting transformation and systems optimization initiatives across the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • 15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience with significant leadership responsibility.
  • Extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SOX compliance, financial reporting, technical accounting, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated success leading corporate accounting teams within large, complex, multi-entity organizations.
  • Strong experience with consolidations, intercompany accounting, foreign currency transactions, and statutory reporting.
  • Experience working with enterprise ERP and financial reporting platforms.
  • Strong executive presence with exceptional leadership, analytical, communication, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site and relocate to the position's location.

Systems & Technology Experience

Candidates should bring strong experience working within sophisticated enterprise financial environments.

Hands-on OneStream experience is highly desired, particularly involving consolidation, reporting, close processes, or financial systems optimization.

Experience with platforms such as SAP, Oracle, HFM, and Power BI is also highly valued.

Preferred Background

Candidates who have led accounting and finance organizations within large, complex operating environments are strongly encouraged to apply.

Experience supporting executive leadership, driving accounting transformation initiatives, managing large-scale consolidations, improving financial processes through automation, and developing high-performing teams is strongly preferred.

Experience within manufacturing, consumer products, distribution, or similarly complex multi-entity environments is beneficial.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: Up to $300,000
  • Annual Performance Bonus: Target 30%
  • Comprehensive Executive Benefits Package
  • Relocation Assistance Available
  • Significant relocation support may be available for highly qualified U.S.-based candidates.
