FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-Time

Location: Everett, WA (on-site / hybrid per agency policy)

Direct Reports: Staff Accountant(s), Accounts Payable/Receivable Personnel

POSITION SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day management of Evergreen Recovery Centers' accounting operations, including general ledger accuracy, month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, internal controls, payroll and regulatory/grant compliance. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller ensures the integrity of financial records across all programs and funding sources, supports budgeting and audit processes, and helps translate financial data into information the leadership team and Board can act on. This is a hands-on role suited to a detail-oriented accounting professional who is comfortable working in a mission-driven, nonprofit behavioral health environment with multiple funding streams, including government contracts, grants, and third-party payer billing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals, ensuring deadlines are met and the general ledger is accurate.
  • Prepare timely, accurate financial statements and management reports for the CFO, CEO, and Board of Directors.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls over cash, revenue, expenditures, and fixed assets in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing and accounting, and cash management functions, including bank and credit card reconciliations.
  • Manage grant and contract accounting, including fund/program-level tracking, allocation of shared costs, and preparation of financial reports required by government and private funders.
  • Support third-party billing and revenue cycle reconciliation for behavioral health services, working with clinical and billing staff to resolve discrepancies.
  • Process and submit invoices for government contracts, ensuring accuracy, proper cost allocation, and compliance with each contract's billing terms and submission deadlines.
  • Coordinate the annual financial statement audit and any single audit (Uniform Guidance) requirements, serving as a primary point of contact for external auditors.
  • Assist the CFO with annual budget preparation, budget-to-actual variance analysis, and cash flow forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as funder-specific financial requirements and reporting deadlines.
  • Maintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal documentation; recommend process and systems improvements.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor accounting staff; review and approve their work product.
  • Support preparation of the annual Form 990, 5500s and other regulatory filings in coordination with the CFO and external tax preparers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience, experience with fund accounting, grant/contract compliance, and multi-funder environments strongly preferred.
  • Experience in behavioral health, healthcare, or a related human services setting is a plus, particularly familiarity with third-party billing and payer reimbursement.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements (FASB ASC 958); familiarity with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200) single audit requirements preferred.
  • Proficiency with accounting/ERP software and advanced Excel skills; experience with systems implementation or process documentation a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, mission-driven organization.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  • High degree of integrity and discretion in handling confidential financial and client-related information.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This role is primarily performed in a standard office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Occasional local travel between Evergreen Recovery Centers sites may be required.
