Who is responsible for ERISA compliance?

ERISA compliance is primarily the responsibility of plan sponsors, such as employers or plan administrators, who must ensure adherence to federal regulations governing employee benefit plans. They are often supported by ERISA consultants, legal advisors, and compliance officers who monitor and implement necessary policies and procedures.

What does ERISA compliance mean?

ERISA compliance refers to adhering to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, which sets standards for the management and administration of employee benefit plans, including retirement and health plans. For ERISA compliance roles, knowledge of federal regulations, plan administration, and relevant certifications like the ERISA Compliance Certification are often required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Erisa Compliance position?

To thrive in an ERISA Compliance role, you need a robust understanding of employee benefits law, regulatory guidelines, and compliance procedures, often supported by a bachelor's degree in business, finance, human resources, or a related field. Familiarity with compliance management software, benefits administration platforms, and industry certifications like CEBS (Certified Employee Benefit Specialist) are highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and excellent communication skills help professionals navigate complex regulations and explain requirements to clients or internal teams. These competencies ensure employer-sponsored benefit plans remain compliant with federal regulations and mitigate legal or financial risks for organizations.

What are some typical challenges faced in an Erisa Compliance position?

Professionals in ERISA Compliance often face the challenge of staying up-to-date with frequently changing regulations and ensuring that benefit plans adapt accordingly. Managing complex plan documentation and responding to audits or regulatory inquiries requires keen attention to detail and thorough record-keeping. There can also be significant cross-functional collaboration with HR, legal, and finance departments to resolve any compliance issues and provide guidance. Successfully navigating these challenges helps protect the organization from costly penalties and fosters a culture of transparency and compliance.

What is an Erisa Compliance?

An ERISA Compliance job involves ensuring that employee benefit plans, such as retirement and health plans, adhere to the requirements of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). Professionals in this role review plan documents, monitor regulatory changes, conduct audits, and address compliance issues to protect the interests of plan participants. They may work for employers, third-party administrators, or government agencies to ensure fiduciary responsibilities are met and avoid legal risks.

Job description

ERISA Compliance Officer

If ERISA regulations, qualified retirement plans, and compliance issues are your version of “fun,” we should probably talk. One of our clients is looking for an ERISA & Compliance Officer to serve as a trusted technical resource on retirement plan compliance, helping colleagues and clients navigate regulations, amendments, eligibility issues, operational defects, and corrections.

This is an opportunity to become the person people turn to when a retirement plan question goes from “pretty straightforward” to “well, that’s interesting…” You’ll research regulatory issues, review plan amendments, support compliance testing, evaluate corrections, and help ensure plan administration stays aligned with ERISA and Department of Labor requirements. You’ll also work closely with retirement plan, audit, relationship management, and compliance professionals, giving you broad exposure to the business rather than putting you in a compliance silo.

The role is remote, hybrid, or on-site, with the ability to live anywhere in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, or Nebraska, plus only 2–3 company-paid trips per year. We’re looking for someone with at least two years of ERISA and qualified plans administration experience who enjoys solving complex problems and translating regulations into practical answers. ASPPA, CEBS, CRPS, or PRP credentials are a plus, but the real differentiator is your ability to know the rules, understand the gray areas, and help others get it right. If you’re ready for a role where your technical expertise actually matters, and where you don’t have to commute to an office every day just to prove you’re working, I’d love to have a confidential conversation.
