Job description

Utilitrain is seeking an experienced Overhead Transmission Instructor to train the next generation of electrical utility professionals. Must be a seasoned transmission Journeyman with a positive attitude.

The instructor should be well versed on new transmission construction. The ideal candidate brings strong classroom and field experience, leadership, and a passion for training future lineworkers.

Location: Elkton, MD (Relocation Required - Assistance provided for the right candidate)

Primary Responsibilities

  • Instruct students in overhead transmission linework, including new transmission construction standards, rebuilds, and work on existing energized and de-energized transmission systems
  • Teach proper use of transmission tooling, equipment, and safety procedures
  • Deliver instruction in both classroom and field-based training on the following:
    • Basic Electricity
    • Transmission Grounding
    • Rigging-Weights and Tensions
    • Transmission Electrical Systems
    • Climbing Instructions-Wood Poles/Steel Towers
    • Transmission Digger Derrick/Bucket Truck Operations
    • Hook Ladders
    • Conductor Pullers/Tensioners
    • Tower/Pole/Bucket Rescues
  • Demonstrate best practices using hands-on instruction
  • Prepare students for entry-level employment with electric utilities and transmission contractors
  • Evaluate and test student performance, skill development, and safety awareness
  • Provide informative feedback to support student growth
  • Uphold industry safety standards, professionalism, and work ethic

Qualifications & Experience

  • Significant practical experience with distribution and transmission voltages, substations and underground
  • The ideal candidate will bring experience or demonstrated competency with Rubber Gloving, Live Line, Hot sticking, Bare hand, and temporary Grounding
  • Experience working from structures and buckets
  • Experience providing training to other linemen
  • Ability to travel up to 70% and work remotely
  • Flexibility required for travel to various locations. Ability to demonstrate tool related products, including, but not limited to, lifting (up to 75 pounds), climbing utility poles and towers, and the general dexterity required to use hand tools
  • 15 yearsโ€™ experience working as an Overhead Transmission Journeyman Lineman
  • Provide distribution and transmission live line tool training up to 500KV
  • Proven background in:
    • New transmission line construction standards
    • Working and maintaining existing transmission infrastructure
    • Utility and/or contractor-based transmission work
  • Strong understanding of transmission safety standards and OSHA work practices
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to entry-level students
  • Leadership mindset with the ability to motivate, mentor, and hold students accountable
  • Willingness to work outdoors and demonstrate physical tasks required in the linework trade
