Job description

Who are we?

Named for several years as a "great place" to work by The Washington Post and Washington Business Journal, Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein & Fox P.L.L.C. is proud to be one of the most highly regarded intellectual property specialty law firms in the world. We recognize that it is the talent and dynamism of each individual at Sterne Kessler that makes that possible. With that in mind, we have cultivated an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating with just the right touch of fun and exuberance. We offer a competitive compensation package with excellent benefits and are Metro-accessible in a prime downtown location with many nearby restaurants and shops.

What do we need?

We are seeking an Intellectual Property (IP) Litigation Paralegal to join our Trial & Appellate (Litigation) Group. We need candidates who can respond quickly to shifting demands and thrive while working under tight deadlines. The ideal candidate would have some previous law firm experience but we're willing to train candidates who are highly-motivated to learn Litigation. Successful paralegals in our Trial & Appellate Group are able to deliver a high-quality work product and work independently with minimal supervision. This position is hybrid from the D.C. area with in-office presence as needed. We would expect travel to trial locations, depending on trial schedules.

How will you make an impact?

  • Providing litigation and trial support to the practice group as necessary.
  • Organizing logistics for patent-based trials; maintaining litigation files; organizing exhibits; preparing case notebooks, simple pleadings, litigation documents, deposition binders, and exhibits; proofreading and cite-checking pleadings; reviewing litigation production documents; and providing other litigation and trial support.
  • Maintaining and monitoring litigation dockets and due dates.
  • Typing and preparing correspondence, memos, forms, and other documentation as assigned; copying documents as necessary; and proofreading all work on a routine basis.
  • Maintaining a working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) and Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure (FRAP).
  • Retrieving and filing information with various government agencies and courts as necessary.
  • Prioritizing workload; responding flexibly and quickly to shifting demands; working under time constraints; and handling multiple detailed tasks simultaneously.
  • Assisting with special projects and assignments as necessary.
  • Other litigation and trial support tasks.

What will you bring to the role?

    • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    • Paralegal certificate a plus, but not required.
    • Trial experience, appellate and district-court litigation experience, and IP/patent litigation experience desired, but not required. We will train the right entry-level or early career candidate.
    • Must possess ability to independently manage demanding workload.
    • Strong desire to work in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
    • Successful independent proofreading abilities.
    • Knowledge of the Bluebook and cite-checking preferred.
    • Propensity for highly detailed work.
        • Must be able to handle sensitive, confidential business information with the utmost discretion.
        • Must be a team player.
        • Must be flexible to work overtime on an as-needed basis.
        • Must be willing to attend trial out of state, as needed.

The good faith base salary range for this position is $57,500 to $60,000 per year. The actual salary rate offered to candidates within that range will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, years of relevant experience, education, and the candidate’s overall qualifications for the position as assessed by the Firm.

            To Apply

Please include a resume and cover letter in your application materials.

Sterne Kessler is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
