What is an entry level IT support?

Entry level IT support jobs are positions that assist users with technical issues related to computer systems, software, and hardware. These roles typically involve troubleshooting problems, installing and configuring technology, and providing guidance to end users. People in these jobs often work as help desk technicians or support specialists and are usually the first point of contact for technical help. They require basic knowledge of computer systems and strong problem-solving and communication skills. Entry level IT support roles are a common starting point for a career in information technology.

What do entry level IT support professionals do?

Entry Level IT Support professionals commonly address a wide range of technical issues, including troubleshooting hardware and software problems, resolving connectivity issues, resetting passwords, and assisting with printer or peripheral configurations. They often serve as the first point of contact for employees experiencing technical difficulties, which requires effective communication and problem-solving skills. These professionals usually work closely with more senior IT staff and may escalate complex issues for further investigation, making teamwork an important part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for entry level IT support?

To thrive as an Entry Level IT Support Specialist, you need foundational knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, basic networking, and often an associate degree or relevant certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified: Fundamentals. Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote desktop tools, and troubleshooting software is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, patience, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for assisting non-technical users. These skills ensure timely and accurate technical support, contributing to efficient business operations and high user satisfaction.

The Opportunity:

The Customer Portals Support Specialist plays a pivotal role in providing technical and operational expertise for our customer-facing portals. Operating at the intersection of business operations, CRM architecture, and enterprise software delivery, this individual collaborates closely with cross-functional business stakeholders, Salesforce platform leads, and software engineering teams.
This position is responsible for scoping requirements, troubleshooting production issues, monitoring interfaces, driving user adoption, and maintaining documentation to ensure a seamless, high-availability customer experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Domain & Platform Expertise: Serve as the functional and technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the SunocoNet customer portal ecosystem across internal teams and external customers.
  • Requirements & Solution Scoping: Partner with business units to capture requirements for portal feature enhancements, translating business logic into actionable technical specifications and user stories.
  • Production Support: Manage and resolve escalated daily support tickets, investigating complex system anomalies, integration failures, and data discrepancies.
  • Identity & Access Governance: Oversee customer portal user provisioning, Single Sign-On (SSO) authentication flows, role-based access controls (RBAC), and security policy configurations.
  • System Observability & Monitoring: Proactively monitor web application health, microservice interfaces, webhooks, and automated batch jobs; manage alert escalations to prevent downtime.
  • Data Analysis & SQL Research: Execute SQL queries and perform database research across enterprise data stores for troubleshooting, operational reporting, and data integrity audits.
  • Quality Assurance & UAT: Perform functional testing for new portal deployments, bug fixes, and feature releases; co-facilitate User Acceptance Testing (UAT) with business stakeholders.
  • Salesforce Ecosystem Collaboration: Partner directly with the Salesforce team on cross-platform data flows, Experience Cloud/Service Cloud integrations, shared testing cycles, and release management.
  • Enablement & Documentation: Develop technical support manuals, API/workflow documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and end-user training resources.

Education:

  • Certifications: Salesforce Certified Administrator and Platform App Builder.

Key Skills and Technical Requirements:

  • Web Architecture & Modern APIs: Strong understanding of modern multi-tier web architectures, cloud infrastructure, RESTful APIs, JSON/XML, SFTP, and browser-level diagnostic tools (DevTools, HTTP request tracing).
  • Advanced Database & SQL Skills: Proficient in writing SQL for data validation, operational troubleshooting, and ad-hoc analysis.
  • Identity & Security Frameworks: Familiarity with modern authentication protocols, including OAuth 2.0, SAML 2.0, and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
  • Agile & IT Service Management (ITSM): Experience navigating Agile delivery methodologies (Scrum/Kanban) and using modern tools like Jira, Confluence, and ServiceNow/Zendesk for ticket and project tracking.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Management: Exceptional interpersonal and technical communication skills. Comfortable leading meetings, presenting solutions to cross-functional stakeholders, and translating business language to development teams.
  • Analytical & Detail-Oriented: Problem-solving mindset with a demonstrated ability to manage concurrent priorities in a fast-paced enterprise environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Industry Experience: Background in the energy, fuel distribution, logistics, or convenience store retail sectors is considered a strong asset.
  • Development Familiarity: Basic exposure to front-end technologies (JavaScript, HTML/CSS) or modern middleware frameworks (MuleSoft, AWS API Gateway, Postman).

Humble. Hungry. Smart. Does this sound like you?

Do others describe you as being a down-to-earth achiever? Someone who thinks outside the box and always strives to do more than what is required. Someone who sees the bigger picture? You sound brilliant to work with!

We Want You To Shine:

We are committed to providing equal opportunities to all applicants. If you require accommodation due to a disability, you will have an opportunity to notify us when scheduling your interview.

Belonging Matters. Because You Do:

We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from all qualified individuals.

Our ability to work as one team across Canada, the United States and the Caribbean is foundational to our success. We show up as our authentic selves each day and create space for one another’s unique contributions.

We respect the diverse cultures, traditions and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples and seek to achieve equitable partnerships and opportunities with Indigenous communities.
