Job description

Job Title:  School Health Technician

Reports to:  Manager of Health Services 

Location: Sunset Elementary

Date of Availability: August 2026

Date Closing: Until Filled


Summary:  Assists the school nurse in meeting the health needs of the children.

Salary: $17.68 - $27.30/hour, actual placement dependent upon experience. 
Education and/or Experience: High School diploma or equivalent.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Eligible or already in possession of American Cross First Aid Certification. Medication administration course within 30 days of hire.  Valid driver's license. 



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Provides first aid for the sick and injured ranging from minor to major based on knowledge, trained and delegated skills.
  • Collects pertinent data and information in a systematic and ongoing manner relative to the student's immediate, interim, and long-term condition or needs under the guidance of the School District Registered Nurse. Including but not limited to:
    • Functional abilities
    • Physical, psychological, social, cognitive, sexual, cultural, age philosophical, and spiritual status
    • Health disparities, patterns, and illness
    • Students and parents or guardians' perception of health status and health goals
    • Health education needs
  • Identifies barriers to effective communication based on psychosocial, literacy, financial, and cultural considerations.
  • Applies ethical, legal and privacy guidelines and policies to the collection, maintenance, use and dissemination of information.
  • Documents relevant data accurately and in a manner accessible to the interprofessional team.
  • Uses assessment data, standardized classification systems, technology, and clinical decision support tools to define actual or potential problems.
  • Prioritizes problems based on mutually established goals to meet the needs of the student across the health-illness continuum.
  • Collaborate with the School District Registered Nurse to formulate and modify achievable and measurable expected outcomes based on the student's condition.
  • Follows an individualized, holistic plan based on the guidelines set forth by the School District Registered Nurse and the students priorities and preferences that reflects current, evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Documents the plan using standardized language or terminology.
  • Implements the identified plan of care using critical thinking and technology through collaboration and communication across the continuum of care.
  • Documents the results of care.
  • Contact school nurse, or designated person in case of major illness or serious injury.
  • Contact parents of ill or injured students in accordance with established policy and, if necessary, prepare and/ or transport the students as deemed necessary by the nurse.
  • Confers with a nurse regarding students absences for health reasons.
  • Informs teacher and other school personnel regarding disposition of students sent to the health office.
  • Maintains files and health office records.
  • Orders supplies as needed.
  • Performs clerical duties for school nurse.
  • Schedules and helps to perform routine screening and testing procedures.
  • Distributes and collects health appraisal forms.
  • Reviews health forms and refers to all pupils needing follow-up.
  • Assists in communicable disease prevention by appraising immunization needs of students.  Make referrals as needed.
  • Observes and records symptoms of health needs of students referred to the office and informs the nurse.
  • Assists in health education activities as required, such as prevention of various films and health programs.
  • Assists in preparing accident reports on serious accidents.
  • May substitute in another school as needed or directed or assist with health screenings in another building.
  • Assist with Pre-school Child Find screenings.
  • Performs duties as directed by school nurses which many include administering medication, distribution and collection of medical assessment tools or other health procedures.
  • Reports abuse to the school nurse or principal.
  • Works with a school counselor as requested.
  • Assists in the school office as required.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
     

Performance Expectations: Demonstrates commitment to performing in accordance with Moffat County School District Mission and Belief Statements. Represents Moffat County School District in a positive, professional manner. Maintains confidentiality at all times. Completes annual education, training, in-services, license/certifications requirements. Attends monthly staff meetings, or reads minutes. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work in a timely manner. Actively participates in district and building specific performance improvement and quality initiatives. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:  The employee supervises students in the class, parents and volunteers.

Benefits include: PERA retirement, and other optional benefit elections.  Employees who are regularly scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week as defined by their position are also eligible for the district's health insurance.

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 

Other Skills and Abilities:  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
