Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist
Requisition Number: 2026-1360-06
Are you a recent or upcoming graduate looking to grow your career as a Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist who thrives in a dynamic environment and values learning from experienced professionals? S&ME is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic entry-level Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist to join our team in New Albany, Indiana.
Visit the Life tab on our LinkedIn profile to learn more about life at S&ME.
What You Will Do:
As an Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer or Geologist, you will support a wide range of civil, geotechnical, and environmental projects, learning from licensed Engineers and/or Geologist. You will gain real-world experience through a strong mix of fieldwork and office-based analysis, not being stuck behind a desk all day. As well as subsurface exploration, environmental investigations, construction support, and technical reporting.
  • Field Investigations & Exploration: Conduct fieldwork including soil borings, drilling oversight, monitor well installation, soil and rock classification, in-situ testing, and collection of soil, groundwater, and gas samples at project sites.
  • Data Analysis & Technical Support: Analyze subsurface conditions, support laboratory testing programs, interpret geological and geotechnical data, and assist with engineering and environmental evaluations.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Prepare data tables, figures, and graphical presentations; compare results to state and federal regulatory standards; and assist in writing clear, well-organized technical reports.
  • Construction & Environmental Inspections: Perform construction and environmental inspections, document site conditions, and ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Coordinate with drilling contractors, laboratories, vendors, and project team members while communicating effectively with internal staff and external clients.

Who We're Looking For:
We are looking for someone who is curious, motivated, and eager to build a career in geotechnical engineering or geology through hands-on field and analytical work. The ideal candidate enjoys working both outdoors and in an office setting, communicating clearly, and is excited to learn from licensed professionals while contributing to meaningful projects. A strong work ethic, adaptability, and interest in professional growth and licensure are key to success in this role.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Mining, or a related field
  • Certifications/Professional Licensure:
    • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Geologist in Training (GIT) with the desire to pursue PE/PG licensure in the future
  • Key Competencies:
    • A passion for Geology and Geotechnical solutions with a strong interest in field and analytical work
    • Basic technical writing skills at the college level

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
This role involves hands-on work in outdoor environments, and with Company-provided Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), you'll need to be comfortable with:
  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing (potentially up to 12 hours a day)
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours and traveling (typically out-of-town and/or overnight) as project needs arise

We Are S&ME:
At S&ME, we're committed to your growth, professionally and personally. With over 50 years of experience delivering innovative solutions in geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction materials engineering, we've built a strong foundation for long-term careers. Our team of over 1,000 employee-owners across 10+ states collaborates to create a meaningful impact on our clients and communities. When you join S&ME, you become part of a collaborative, honest, and people-focused culture that invests in your success. We offer exciting project opportunities, ongoing training, and a comprehensive benefits package to support you and your family. This is more than a job; it's a place to grow, thrive, and build a future.
What We Offer:
Comprehensive Health & Wellness Programs
  • Medical, Dental & Vision Plans with HSA and FSA options
  • Wellness Program offering $50 off per month on 2027 premiums
  • Pet Insurance for your furry family members

Ownership & Financial Perks

  • 401(k) Retirement Plan to help you plan ahead

Work-Life Balance & Career Development
  • Paid Holidays, PTO with rollover options, and Paid Maternity & Paternity Leave
  • Mentorship & Career Development Programs, Tuition Reimbursement, and Credential Incentive Program
  • Employee Recognition Program, $2,000 Referral Bonuses, and a company vehicle & fuel card for project-based roles

If you're passionate about making an impact and want to work with a firm committed to our employees and providing quality service to our clients, we'd love to hear from you!
