Job Title: Pediatric Physical Therapist – Inpatient

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Employment Type: Full-Time


Position Summary

The Pediatric Physical Therapist provides comprehensive physical therapy services to pediatric inpatients referred for evaluation and treatment. Responsibilities include assessment, development and implementation of individualized treatment plans, follow-up care, and discharge planning.

This role actively contributes to departmental clinical operations, program development, quality improvement initiatives, and student supervision. The therapist also supervises Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs), rehabilitation technicians, and volunteers while promoting a collaborative, patient- and family-centered care environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive evaluations to assess physical and functional status, considering diagnosis, age-specific needs, developmental level, and cognitive abilities.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients and families, establishing measurable goals and appropriate intervention strategies.
  • Provide evidence-based interventions tailored to pediatric populations across varying diagnoses and levels of medical complexity.
  • Document evaluations, daily and weekly progress notes, discharge summaries, and other required documentation in accordance with regulatory and professional standards.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary patient care conferences, family meetings, in-service programs, and departmental meetings.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients, families, and caregivers regarding evaluation findings, treatment plans, home programs, and discharge recommendations.
  • Initiate and complete timely discharge planning, including coordination of community referrals and post-acute services as appropriate.
  • Assist in coordination and supervision of Physical Therapy and Physical Therapist Assistant student programs, as well as volunteer programs.
  • Support clinical department operations, including orientation of new staff, patient scheduling to ensure quality coverage, and appropriate staff supervision.
  • Participate in performance improvement and quality initiatives to support clinical excellence and departmental productivity standards.
  • Maintain knowledge of community resources to facilitate appropriate referrals and continuity of care.
  • Engage in professional development, educational activities, and research initiatives as appropriate.
  • Adapt evaluation and treatment methods to accommodate each patient’s unique physical, psychological, cultural, developmental, and age-specific needs.
  • Foster positive and professional relationships with medical staff, physicians, referral sources, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from an accredited Physical Therapy program.
  • Current state licensure as a Physical Therapist (or eligibility for licensure).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Knowledge of modalities and equipment consistent with professional practice standards.
  • Demonstrated competence in pediatric physical therapy across developmental stages.
  • Strong clinical reasoning, communication, organizational, and supervisory skills.


Work Environment

  • Inpatient pediatric hospital setting.
  • Requires physical activity including lifting, transferring, positioning, and assisting pediatric patients of various ages and sizes.
