Job description
Sep 03, 2026
DeadlineDec 01, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
DescriptionThe Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position. Applications are welcome from all areas of aerospace and mechanical engineering. The Department is particularly interested in candidates whose work complements and bridges existing strengths in its five research pillars: bioengineering; computational engineering; fluid mechanics; materials, energy, and manufacturing; and robotics and controls. Strategic priorities include human health and well-being; sustainable energy, propulsion, and aerospace systems; advanced materials and manufacturing; dynamics, control, and automation; physical artificial intelligence and autonomy; and research that couples AI with physics-based modeling, simulation, and experimentation.
The Department seeks to attract, develop, and retain exceptional faculty members with strong records of achievement and significant future potential. The search is primarily aimed at the assistant professor level; however, candidates at all ranks with strong records and promise will be considered, and possible position titles include Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. Candidates at the entry level must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. degree, or have completed all but the dissertation, in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field; candidates at the advanced assistant, associate, or full professor level must hold a Ph.D. in one of these fields. Duties for a successful candidate will include teaching, research and service. Successful candidates will demonstrate the potential to achieve an internationally distinguished record of scholarship, establish an externally funded research program, excel in undergraduate and graduate education, and contribute actively to their research community and to the University.
Notre Dame is a private research university with a distinctive mission that joins ambitious scholarship to a commitment to the common good. New faculty join a collegial department with extensive shared experimental and computational facilities, competitive start-up support, and well-established collaborations across the College of Engineering and with university-wide institutes and initiatives in energy, health, data and computing, and artificial intelligence.
The Department is concurrently conducting a separate search for a tenure-track faculty position in robotics. Candidates whose interests span both searches are welcome to apply to either; applications will be considered by both committees as appropriate.
QualificationsCandidates at the entry level must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. degree, or have completed all but the dissertation, in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field; candidates at the advanced assistant, associate, or full professor level must hold a Ph.D. in one of these fields.
The University of Notre Dame seeks to attract, develop, and retain the highest quality faculty, staff and administration. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or age in employment. Moreover, Notre Dame prohibits discrimination against veterans or disabled qualified individuals, and complies with 41 CFR 60-741.5(a) and 41 CFR 60-300.5(a). We strongly encourage applications from candidates attracted to a university with a Catholic identity.
This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate. The full procedure can be viewed at https://facultyhandbook.nd.edu/?id=link-73597 .
