How much do aerospace engineer jobs pay per year?
What Do Aerospace Engineers Do?
Aerospace Engineers manufacture and design aircraft, satellites, missiles, aeronautical and astronautical products and technologies for development, research, defense, and commercial use. They document and evaluate the production of aircraft and aircraft technologies, including commercial and military airplanes, propulsion systems, navigation systems, instrumentation, communication, and thermodynamic and aerodynamic materials used in flight. Aerospace Engineers use highly complex computer systems and software to model, design, evaluate, and simulate parts, products, and vehicles in order to determine if proposals are financially feasible and whether designs will meet regulatory and safety standards. They confer with each other on large-scale projects that require group input, completing a multitude of tasks on a single project through the shared duties of many engineers.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Aerospace Engineer, and why are they important?
What will I do as an aerospace engineer?
What does an aerospace engineer do?
What is the difference between Aerospace Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?
| Aspect | Aerospace Engineer | Mechanical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in aerospace or aeronautical engineering; often a Professional Engineer (PE) license | Bachelor's in mechanical engineering; PE license optional |
| Work Environment | Designing aircraft, spacecraft, satellites; working in labs, design offices, and manufacturing | Designing machinery, engines, HVAC systems; working in factories, labs, and offices |
| Industry Usage | Aerospace, defense, space exploration | Automotive, manufacturing, energy, robotics |
| Common Search/Comparison | Yes | No |
In summary, aerospace engineers specialize in designing and developing aircraft and spacecraft, often requiring specific aerospace credentials and working in specialized environments. Mechanical engineers have a broader focus on machinery and systems across various industries, with more general credentials. The key difference lies in their industry focus and the types of projects they handle.

Job description
SAIC is seeking a Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) Modeling and Simulation Aerospace Engineer to support hypersonic weapon systems development in Crane, IN. As a critical member of our team, you will help design, model, and validate GN&C systems for hypersonic weapons, with a focus on simulation development, algorithm design, and performance analysis in a mission-critical environment. Your work will directly contribute to optimizing weapon system performance in high-speed and harsh environments.
NOTE: This is a hybrid position requiring the candidate to be in office 1-4 times per week.
JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Develop, implement, and refine GNC algorithms for guidance, control, and navigation
- Support hypersonic weapon system modeling and simulation, including 6 DOF (six degrees of freedom) simulations
- Perform trajectory analysis, mission performance evaluations, and control system stability assessments
- Analyze telemetry, flight test data, and HWIL/SIL outputs to validate system performance
- Conduct Monte Carlo analysis, uncertainty modeling, and system performance sensitivity studies
- Evaluate system performance in complex scenarios and environments and verify system and subsystem level requirements
- Support requirements decomposition, interface definition, and subsystem integration with system engineering teams
- Document models, test results, algorithm behavior, and performance in technical reports and presentations
- Participate in technical reviews, design sessions, and engineering working groups with government and contractor personnel
Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline (Master's preferred)
- 3+ years' experience in GNC engineering, missile guidance, flight controls, or related system modeling
- Interim clearance required with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Secret level.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, FORTRAN or equivalent simulation frameworks/programming languages
- Candidate must have demonstrated the ability to perform one or more of the following Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) or Modeling and Simulation (M&S) assignments based on completed course work or professional experience:
- Develop and analyze algorithms such as guidance, navigation, autopilot, inertial tracking, and servo control algorithms
- Develop and/or verify/validate complex vehicle models and simulations such as missile 6-degree-of-freedom simulations
- Demonstrate strong math skills in the areas of linear algebra, matrix math, statistics, trigonometry, and coordinate transformations
PREFFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Familiarity with hardware in the loop (HWIL) or software in the loop (SIL) environments
- Experience supporting missile systems, unmanned systems, or weapons/flight dynamics programs
- Experience supporting DoD/DoW Weapons Systems
- Experience with aerospace flight test data analysis or guidance verification
- Current active Secret clearance
