What is an entertainment project manager?

Entertainment Project Managers are professionals responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing projects within the entertainment industry, such as film productions, live events, television shows, or music festivals. They coordinate schedules, manage budgets, liaise with creative and technical teams, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within scope. Their role is crucial for ensuring smooth operations and successful delivery of entertainment projects, often requiring strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

How does an entertainment project manager typically coordinate with creative teams and external vendors throughout a project?

Entertainment Project Managers play a vital role in bridging the gap between creative teams (such as writers, directors, and designers) and external vendors (like production houses, equipment suppliers, or marketing agencies). They facilitate regular meetings, establish clear communication channels, and ensure all parties are aligned with project goals and timelines. By managing schedules, budgets, and deliverables, they help minimize misunderstandings and keep projects running smoothly. Effective collaboration and adaptability are key, as entertainment projects often involve last-minute changes and tight deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entertainment project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entertainment Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, budgeting, scheduling, and a solid understanding of the entertainment industry, often supported by a relevant degree or certification such as PMP. Familiarity with project management software like Asana or Trello, as well as budgeting tools and contracts management systems, is typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills enable you to coordinate creative teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills are crucial for ensuring complex entertainment projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the desired creative vision.

Job description

At Cuningham, we design a better world with deep respect for the real one. Our Themed Entertainment team partners with world-class clients to create immersive environments that spark imagination, inspire connection, and bring stories to life, designing attractions, destinations, and experiences that captivate guests of all ages. Blending creativity with technical excellence, we transform bold ideas into unforgettable places, guided by a shared belief that great design should be selfless: built for the guest, not the ego.
We're looking for a Project Manager who has successfully led Themed Entertainment and Attractions projects from concept through completion - someone who brings curiosity, craft, and care to every phase of delivery. If you're energized by collaborating with creative, multidisciplinary teams, navigating complex project challenges, and pushing bold ideas while staying grounded in what's feasible and durable, we'd love to meet you. This role is ideal for an experienced project manager who thrives at the intersection of creativity, leadership, and project delivery.
What you will be doing:
  • Lead Themed Entertainment and Attractions projects of all sizes from proposal through completion, ensuring successful delivery of scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client expectations.
  • Build and lead high-performing project teams in partnership with Project Executives and project leadership.
  • Develop project scopes, fees, schedules, labor plans, and work plans while monitoring progress throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Proactively identify when project activities fall outside the contracted scope of services; initiate timely conversations with the client and project team, and obtain formal approval for any additional services required.
  • Coordinate architecture, interiors, engineering, specialty consultants, and creative teams to deliver highly coordinated project documentation.
  • Manage project financial performance, resource planning, forecasting, and staffing using Deltek Vantagepoint and other project management tools.
  • Foster strong client relationships through proactive communication, collaboration, and exceptional project leadership.
  • Identify project risks, resolve complex project challenges, and collaborate with leadership to develop creative solutions.
  • Administer owner and consultant contracts while facilitating effective communication among clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Support business development efforts by contributing to proposals, interviews, client presentations, and project pursuits.
  • Utilize industry-standard project management and collaboration tools, including Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Deltek Vantagepoint, Microsoft Project (or similar), AIA Contracts, Microsoft Teams, Miro, and Revit/Forma.

What we look for:
  • 8+ years of project management experience within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.
  • Required: Demonstrated experience managing Themed Entertainment and Attractions projects through multiple phases of design and construction.
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams through all phases of project delivery while balancing design excellence, technical quality, schedule, and budget.
  • Strong knowledge of project budgeting, scheduling, contracts, staffing, forecasting, and financial management.
  • Experience building trusted client relationships and successfully managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project (or similar), AIA Contracts, and Deltek Vantagepoint.
  • Familiarity with Revit, Forma, and Miro.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, organization, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • A collaborative leadership style and a passion for delivering immersive environments that create memorable guest experiences.
