Job description

Our client, a leader in the Nuclear/Automation field, is looking for a Technical Writer to join their team on a long term contract in the KWC area.

Job Description

The Technical Writer will develop clear, accurate, and user-focused technical documentation for nuclear projects, including maintenance manuals, operating manuals, design descriptions, test plans, and commissioning procedures. Working closely with mechanical, electrical, software, and engineering teams, this role synthesizes complex technical data into accessible content for highly regulated end users. The writer will support both decommissioning and refurbishment projects, ensuring all documentation aligns with strict regulatory, operational, and tooling standards while contributing to continuous improvement of documentation processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive technical documentation for nuclear projects, including maintenance manuals, operating manuals, design descriptions, standard operating procedures, test plans, and commissioning procedures.
  • Synthesize complex engineering data—such as drawings, schematics, bills of materials, and technical specifications—into accurate, accessible, and user-friendly written content.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, software, and other engineering teams to ensure technical accuracy, consistency, and completeness across all documentation deliverables.
  • Interview subject matter experts (SMEs) to gather detailed technical information and translate it into clear instructions, procedures, and reference materials for end users.
  • Create and edit technical illustrations, diagrams, and figures using CAD models or technical photography to support written documentation.
  • Prepare documents for customer submission, including formatting, quality checks, and compliance reviews, while tracking revisions and incorporating stakeholder feedback.
  • Maintain organized document archives and configuration control, ensuring all documentation complies with internal standards and customer requirements.
  • Ensure documentation adheres to applicable nuclear plant operations, maintenance procedures, tooling standards, and regulatory terminology.
  • Support project proposals by providing documentation effort estimates and input on documentation scope and deliverables.
  • Contribute to continuous process improvement by recommending and helping implement enhancements to documentation standards, templates, and workflows.
  • Work across multiple concurrent projects (e.g., decommissioning and refurbishment) and prioritize tasks based on project needs, such as commissioning activities, test plans, and maintenance documentation.
  • Document automated and semi-automated tooling systems, including removal, installation, and inspection tooling, as well as facility automated equipment used in hybrid automation and construction environments.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 3–5+ years of experience as a Technical Writer in the nuclear industry or a similarly highly regulated technical field such as automation, automotive, or industrial applications.
  • Proven technical writing and documentation experience, with a strong portfolio of manuals, procedures, and technical content.
  • Education in Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to interview subject matter experts and translate complex technical concepts into clear, user-friendly documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and control logic, and to understand how systems function at both the system and component levels.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams (mechanical, electrical, software) to validate and refine technical content.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy when handling technical data, revisions, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain structured document archives and manage multiple documents and projects simultaneously.

Work Environment

The role is based in an office environment in Cambridge, with a hybrid work arrangement available. The position will typically start with 4–5 days per week in the office for approximately the first month to integrate with the team, learn tools and processes, and get up to speed on active projects. After the initial ramp-up period, the schedule can transition to a hybrid model, generally around three days in the office and two days working remotely, with some flexibility based on project needs. You will work closely with a dynamic engineering group supporting multiple nuclear projects, including decommissioning and refurbishment activities, and will regularly interact with teams focused on automated and semi-automated tooling systems and facility automated equipment in a hybrid automation and construction context. The work involves extensive use of engineering documentation, CAD-based visuals, and standard office productivity and document management tools in a structured, process-driven environment.
