What is an Engineering Rotational Program job?

An Engineering Rotational Program is a structured, entry-level program designed to provide new engineers with exposure to multiple teams, projects, or disciplines within a company. Participants rotate through different assignments over a set period, typically 12-36 months, gaining diverse technical experience and business knowledge. The program helps develop well-rounded engineers with a broad skill set, networking opportunities, and a deeper understanding of the organization. It often includes mentorship, training, and potential career acceleration.

What are the typical rotations and experiences included in an Engineering Rotational Program?

Engineering Rotational Programs generally offer participants the chance to work in several different departments or specialties, such as design, manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management, over a fixed period—often 18–36 months. The rotations are structured to provide broad exposure to a company’s operations, allowing you to develop both technical expertise and a strong understanding of organizational processes. You’ll frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams, take on meaningful project work, and receive mentorship from senior engineers. Job description

Please note: This is a posting targeting current BAE Systems Inc interns and entry level professionals. Normal external applications will open in August.
How does it feel to work on a team driven to make a big impact? Empowering. We believe your career should always be growing. And that's exactly what it will do at BAE Systems as part of our Leadership Development Program (LDP). The LDP is designed to accelerate the development and career of highly-motivated recent college graduates who aspire to achieve their leadership potential. This is accomplished through challenging and rewarding rotational assignments, technical and leadership training, advanced education, leadership opportunities and exposure, and mentorship. You'll hit the ground running with a company truly committed to your growth as you enjoy a special camaraderie on a team dedicated to protecting what really matters.
As an Engineering Leadership Development Program participant, you will gain:
  • Experience: The ELDP consists of three, one-year onsite rotations; each with increasing responsibility. It is designed to provide diverse set of experiences within Engineering areas and disciplines. ELDP participants are also exposed to a variety of networking opportunities and strategic project initiatives.
  • Flexibility: The ELDP does provide flexibility for program participants. This flexibility includes ELDP participant input of 2nd and 3rd rotational assignments and/or geographic location but is ultimately dependent on business need and availability.
  • Education: It is a requirement of this program to complete a technical Master's Degree Program. BAE Systems offers robust tuition assistance for graduate school. The school and specific technical degree is left up to the candidate, providing it is applicable to the business and the program structure and approved by Program Manager.
  • Opportunity to travel: Our ELDP primarily rotating to locations within the United States and Platforms and Services footprint. Your first rotation and final placement will be at Sterling Heights, MI or Minneapolis, MN. Your second and third rotations may be at any of our sector locations nationwide.
  • Mentorship: A mentor is assigned to each ELDP participant to expose them to diverse and challenging experiences, while providing guidance in career development and off-program placement.
  • Personal growth: The program seeks to facilitate the growth of an individual's leadership skills through an annual, week-long leadership development conference (LDC). This conference provides personalized leadership training as well as an opportunity to network with senior BAE Systems executives and other leadership development program participants across the company. Participants can also expect to complete a technical and leadership curriculum during the program which will provide a holistic career development experience through a mix of in-person and virtual trainings.

The ELDP is a three-year rotational program designed to develop high potential, entry-level individuals into future leaders. You'll have the opportunity to experience assignments in several operational functions, business areas, and product groups nationwide.
Rotational examples include:
  • Electrical Design Engineering
  • Physics-based Analyses
  • Test/Verification Engineering
  • Production Support
  • Systems Engineering
Opportunity for Early Start Prior to June
The official Leadership Program Cohort begins in June each year. If you have already completed your bachelor's degree or finish in December, you may be eligible to begin employment at BAE Systems, Inc. prior to the official program start if business conditions allow it. However, additional program elements such as trainings, projects and committees will not begin until your cohort start date. If relocating, you would also have to relocate to your designated location to begin the early start. Ask your recruiter about LDP early start if you are available and believe you may be eligible.
