What is the difference between Engineer Torque vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectEngineer TorqueMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical or related field, certifications like PE or torque-specific trainingBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, automotive, aerospace settings focusing on torque application and testingDesign, analysis, manufacturing across various industries
Industry UsageSpecialized in torque-related roles within mechanical systemsBroader mechanical systems design and analysis

Engineer Torque focuses on torque application, testing, and calibration within mechanical systems, often requiring specialized torque knowledge. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, including design, analysis, and manufacturing of mechanical systems. Both roles share similar credentials but differ in specialization and work environment.

Job description

The Powertrain Controls Engineer will work within a team of Powertrain controls, calibrations and integration engineers to develop electrified powertrain systems for current and next-generation electrified powertrains for Stellantis NV vehicles. The overall goal for the team is to develop a complete electrified powertrain that meets the vehicle functional requirements for fuel economy, emissions, drivability, and diagnostics.
The ideal candidate, who must be a strong team player and willing to work in a fast paced environment, will be involved in developing controls strategies related to strategic optimization of engine speed, gear, powertrain state, engine torque optimization, and tactical torque controls for drivability management, brake regeneration controls and hybrid shift execution strategies. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in modeling of mechanical transmission systems and be familiar with using lever analogy principles for determining dynamic torque and speed relations used extensively across hybrid torque controls.
The Powertrain Controls Engineer Senior will work closely with a cross functional team, utilizing various tools (vehicle, HIL, Dyno, Virtual, rapid prototyping) through the V-model development process to ensure quality and robustness of the production algorithms. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Model mechanical systems to simulate and understand requirements in Simulink for control purposes
  • Interface with systems and calibration to fully understand the requirements
  • Develop implementation strategies
  • Assess and document the impacts against regulatory requirement
  • Markup simulink models to ensure the design meets functional/operational requirements
  • Validate the design during the production process
  • Ensure project is on track by developing plans, track progress, and present technical report to management and project chiefs
  • Participate in the decision making process on controls strategy design to achieve functional objectives

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university with 10+ Years Automotive Experience
  • Specialization in classical and modern control disciplines with vehicle application
  • Embedded software experience
  • Experience with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/SIMULINK
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS-INCA
  • Demonstrated technical problem solving
  • Strong overall knowledge of vehicle and powertrain functions
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, development, testing, calibration and/or validation
  • Outstanding interpersonal and problem solving skills
  • 8+ years experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters or PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university with 5+ years' experience
  • Specialization in hybrid torque control disciplines
  • Knowledge of powertrain control system architecture/best practices.
  • Demonstrated application of technical excellence
