The primary purpose of this position is To perform the full range of electroplating operations to include surface modification technologies such as automated shot peen. The master electroplater will work with engineering to develop new processes and work standards as needed to meet new demands and aid in training of new plating personnel and will evaluate and certify the work that the trainee performs during the training period. The master electroplater will perform new or unusual work including operations that require plating or treatment of limited or precisely defined areas on parts. This requires understanding the process of, and plating with chromium, cadmium, nickel (sulfamate and electroless), anodize, phosphate, Alodine, Zinc-Nickel and other similar processes on high strength steel, aluminum, and other alloys and materials in the Air Force inventory. Examines a wide variety of parts arriving at the plating shop to verify T.O. compliance and determine if the type and amount of plating proscribed in the component documentation will be adequate and achievable. Takes into consideration the unique strengths and weaknesses of each coating/substrate combination to examine component and work documentation to determine chance for successful plating. Inspects incoming components with measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, digital coating thickness gauges, and other precision measuring equipment to determine viability of plating options on the work control document. Set up and operate automated NC controlled shot peening machines for the purpose of imparting compressive stresses on the surface of Air Force components in order to increase resistance to fatigue crack formation in the field.

- The employee may be required to work extended or other than normal duty hours to include overtime, and/or days, swings, or owl shifts.
- The employee may be required to work during base exercises, contingencies or emergency situations.
- The employee may occasionally travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft IAW Joint Travel Regulations to other government installations, contractor facilities, or other commercial Locations for both training and mission accomplishment.
Recruitment Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of electroplating processes to plate and treat limited or precisely defined areas on a part, apply special treatment and processing procedures to insure adherence of metallic deposits or coatings, or require extensive or precise controls of the electrolytic or chemical process; and plating process to identify basic problems such as inefficient cleaning, spotty stripping, low cathode efficiency, pitting, poor throwing power, faulty adhesion, rough plate, nonuniform plating, or corrosion failure that may occur in any plating process; locate probable causes; and make corrections and adjustments. The master electroplater must be
able to train other shop personnel with this knowledge.
2. Ability to safely use NC controlled programmable shot peen machines to impart compressive stresses of proper coverage and intensity in order to increase the fatigue life and resistance to cracking of air force components.
3. Skill to safely set up and operate electrolytic and chemical equipment to accomplish precision, protective, and decorative metallic or nonmetallic finishes on a wide array of metal and metal alloy objects; and in using precision measuring instruments such as magnetic thickness gages, electronic thickness testers, dial bore gages, micrometers, and calipers; restates, voltmeters, and ammeters; and pH meters, hydrometers, and scales.
4. Skill to safely restore worn metal surfaces to original dimensions with successive precision buildups of chrome, hard anodize aluminum alloys, and touch up surfaces that require precision finishes with selective brush plating; in controlling current density and plating range, masking metal objects having unusual shapes and dimensions, selecting and correctly positioning of anodes in the solution, and determining and using appropriate pre-plating, plating, and post-plating processes for the work; in adapting auxiliary anodes, holding devices, jigs, fixtures, and thieving materials to fit intricate contours of internal metal surfaces; and in adapting standard plating and coating methods to perform new or unusual work such as one-of-a-kind jobs that require special or complex setups, very close thickness tolerances or especially smooth surface finishes. Ability to train other shop personnel in these electroplating practices.
5.Ability to use shop mathematics and dimensions of parts to calculate the extent of intricate surface areas to be plated, and the sizes of anodes or holding devices and to use new specially designed conforming anodes to produce precision coatings. Is able to determine if a given anode set will produce proper coatings that comply with technical order requirements, can calculate exact build rates and deliver parts that are coated to an exact dimension.
