Michigan Sugar Company has an immediate, full-time opportunity for a Electrical/Instrumentation Supervisor, located at the Bay City Factory, 2600 S. Euclid Ave., Bay City, MI 48706.
JOB SUMMARY
The Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Supervisor provides frontline leadership for the electrical, instrumentation, and automation maintenance teams, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement. This position develops and coach's employees, establishes clear performance expectations, promotes employee engagement, and ensures all work is performed safely and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
The E&I Supervisor directs daily electrical, instrumentation, and automation maintenance activities to maximize equipment reliability, operational performance, and production efficiency. Working closely with Operations, Engineering, Reliability, and Maintenance Planning, this role prioritizes work, coordinates resources, supports preventive and predictive maintenance strategies, and provides technical leadership for plant electrical distribution, instrumentation, PLCs, process control systems, and industrial automation. The position also supports capital projects and drives continuous improvement to enhance reliability, optimize performance, and develop technical talent.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead by example to promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, NFPA, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements.
- Supervise, coach, develop, and evaluate electricians, instrumentation technicians, and apprentices.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement throughout the E&I organization.
- Plan, prioritize, and coordinate daily electrical, instrumentation, and automation maintenance.
- Ensure the safe, reliable operation of plant electrical distribution, instrumentation, PLCs, process controls, and automation systems.
- Troubleshoot complex equipment failures and implement corrective actions to improve reliability.
- Support preventive, maintenance excellence programs to minimize downtime.
- Partner with Operations, Engineering, Reliability, and Maintenance Planning to improve equipment performance and execute maintenance and capital projects.
- Manage maintenance work orders, schedules, contractors, and departmental resources to achieve operational objectives utilizing AMMS and other maintenance management systems.
- Monitor KPIs and drive continuous improvement in safety, reliability, quality, and cost performance.
- Maintain compliance with environmental, food safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and maintain maintenance procedures, technical documentation, and employee training.
- Ensure the reliability and availability of electrical distribution systems, motor control centers (MCCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), PLCs, instrumentation, analyzers, process control systems, and industrial automation equipment.
- Participate in planning, design review, commissioning, startup, and optimization of capital projects and equipment modifications.
- Maintain accurate documentation of electrical drawings, PLC programs, instrumentation records, calibration records, and equipment history.
- Ensure instrumentation calibration programs and electrical testing programs are completed in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in developing and managing department budgets while effectively controlling labor, materials, contractors, and maintenance expenditures.
- Participate in root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts to improve safety & reliability.
- Support plant shutdowns, campaign start-ups, inter-campaign maintenance, and emergency repair activities to ensure successful operational execution.
- Participate in the on-call rotation and provide technical leadership during equipment failures, production upsets, and emergency situations.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- State of Michigan Journeyman Electrician License is required. State of Michigan Master Electrician License preferred.
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Experience leading electrical, instrumentation, or automation activities in an industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, PLCs, instrumentation, process controls, and automation.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with AMMS, Microsoft Office, and maintenance-related software systems.
