Document Controller

Atomic Machines

Emeryville, CA • On-site

Full-time

Posted 23 days ago

Job description

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler technology platform. This platform enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by providing manufacturing processes and a materials library that are inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It unlocks MEMS manufacturing not only for device classes that could never be produced by semiconductor methods, but also for entirely new categories. Furthermore, this digital platform is fully programmable in the way 3D printing is digital-but whereas 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the Matter Compiler technology platform is a multi-process, multi-material system: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device-made possible only through the Matter Compiler technology platform-that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

About the role:

As a document controller at Atomic Machines, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and accessibility of our revolutionary technology's documentation. Leveraging your interest or experience in Computer Aided Design, you'll assist in capturing detailed engineering concepts, manufacturing processes, and product specifications into clear, concise documentation. Your efforts will support a wide audience, from engineers and fabricators to our internal shop and future customers. You'll contribute to a passionate team, helping to shape company processes and products, and your work will be vital in bringing a new category of devices to life. If you are eager to dive into technical details and help communicate them effectively to the engineering community, we encourage you to apply!

What You'll Do:

  • Manage day-to-day document control operations in Arena, including creating, updating, and releasing documentation for assemblies, drawings, specifications, SOPs, and manufacturing instructions.
  • Perform content QA checks in Arena, ensuring drawing packages, metadata, revision sequences, and file attachments meet company standards.
  • Route and track ECOs (Engineering Change Orders), following up with approvers and ensuring timely closure of release workflows.
  • Maintain structured category hierarchies, templates, and naming conventions to support consistency across product lines.
  • Conduct detailed pre-release checks on engineering drawings and assemblies, reviewing for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to ASME Y14 and company standards.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and product managers to clarify missing details, verify revision intent, and resolve discrepancies prior to release.
  • Serve as a subject-matter contact for document control processes and Arena usage, guiding teams on best practices and troubleshooting issues.
  • Create and refine Work Instructions (SOPs), ensuring documentation is structured, readable, and aligned with shop floor and engineering needs.
  • Develop and maintain onboarding content, including templates, checklists, and training materials that help new hires quickly learn documentation workflows.
  • Own change management for documentation.
  • Contribute to an evolving internal knowledge base by documenting lessons learned, FAQs, Arena workflows, and style guidelines.
  • Identify documentation or workflow gaps and propose improvements for efficiency, clarity, and compliance.
  • Audit documents assisting to ensure compliance to internal and customer requirements.
  • Interface with training/operations teams to ensure all employees have access to relevant documentation and that training is up to date.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining style guides, document templates, and metadata standards to ensure high-quality, user-friendly documentation.
  • Champion user feedback-tracking pain points and driving updates to documentation, templates, or PLM processes.
  • Perform light CAD tasks in Onshape, including navigating assemblies, exporting drawings, and preparing files for release.
  • Support the PLM/CAD Administrator in bridging CAD and PLM workflows, ensuring documentation accurately reflects current design intent.

What You'll Need:

  • 5+ years of experience in document control, PLM administration, product engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Strong understanding of Engineering Documentation principles, including revision control, lifecycle management, and configuration management.
  • Proven experience applying ASME Y14 standards, geometric tolerancing, and engineering drawing fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of PLM systems (Arena strongly preferred) including ECO workflows, metadata structures, item records, and release processes.
  • Ability to train and assist cross-functional users on document release best practices, Arena workflows, file requirements, and naming conventions.
  • Capable of identifying documentation issues and proposing corrective actions or process adjustments.
  • Strong communication skills-able to translate engineering concepts into clear actionable documentation for technicians, fabricators, and engineers.
  • Desire to learn or prior experience with CAD (Onshape is a plus).
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, assembly breakdowns, and mechanical design details.
  • Comfortable dealing with shifting priorities, evolving requirements, and fast-paced decision making.
  • Proactive in identifying gaps or inefficiencies and motivated to introduce improvements.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple projects while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of documentation development cycles, versioning, change management, structured writing, and auditing.
  • Self-driven commitment to maintaining high documentation quality, usability, and clarity.
  • Familiarity with developing SOPs, style guides, templates, knowledge bases, or training resources.
  • BS/BA in Communications, Engineering, a technical field, or equivalent practical experience
