Job description

CONSTRUCTION CONTROLLER

Specialty Systems Inc. | Bloomington, Minnesota | Full-Time

About Specialty Systems

Specialty Systems Inc. is a growing specialty construction contractor with approximately $15 million in annual revenue. We deliver commercial exterior systems including ACM metal panels, single-skin metal panels, Nichiha products, sunshades, awnings, and related scopes. Our success depends on strong project execution, accurate information, and disciplined financial management.

The Opportunity

We are hiring a hands-on Construction Controller to own the company’s accounting and financial reporting functions. This role will work directly with the President/Owner and operational leaders to improve visibility into cash, job performance, margin, and risk.

This is not a narrow reporting position. The right person will understand construction operations, ask the right questions, and turn financial data into decisions that improve project profitability and company performance.

What You Will Own

• Lead the full accounting cycle, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll oversight, bank reconciliations, and month-end close.

• Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, WIP schedules, job profitability reports, and management reporting.

• Own construction accounting processes including AIA billing, pay applications, job costing, change orders, lien waivers, percentage-of-completion accounting, and revenue recognition.

• Maintain project budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete reporting. Identify margin changes early and provide clear variance analysis.

• Manage cash flow planning, treasury activity, collections visibility, and short-term cash projections tied to project cycles.

• Partner with project managers, estimators, and operations leaders to improve financial discipline around bids, change orders, purchasing, billing, and project closeout.

• Maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and reliable processes that protect the company and support growth.

• Coordinate with the company’s CPA, tax advisors, banks, bonding partners, insurance providers, and auditors.

• Lead accounting system improvements, reporting automation, and process changes that reduce manual work and improve accuracy.

• Supervise and develop accounting team members as the department evolves.

What Success Looks Like

• Financial statements and WIP reporting are accurate, timely, and trusted by leadership.

• Project margin movement is identified while there is still time to act, not after the job is complete.

• Leadership has a dependable view of cash needs, collections, backlog, and financial risk.

• Project teams understand the financial impact of their decisions and receive clear, useful reporting.

• Accounting processes are documented, controlled, and able to support the next stage of the company.

Required Experience

• At least five years of progressive accounting experience, including significant construction accounting responsibility.

• Strong working knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, AIA billing, and cash flow management.

• Experience preparing financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and project-level profitability analysis.

• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience with construction accounting or ERP software.

• Ability to work independently, set priorities, and follow issues through to resolution in a small-company environment.

• High integrity, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate directly with both financial and operational teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Equivalent construction accounting experience will also be considered.

• Experience with Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, Foundation, Procore, or a comparable construction software platform.

• Experience working with a specialty contractor, general contractor, or construction company in the $10 million to $50 million revenue range.

• Prior experience supervising or developing accounting staff.

Compensation and Benefits

• Base salary: 90-120k

• Health, dental, and vision insurance.

• Retirement plan with company match.

• Paid time off and paid holidays.

• Professional development and the opportunity to build the financial systems of a growing specialty contractor.

Work Location

Bloomington, Minnesota.
