Job description

Controllerโ€“ Minneapolis, MN

Location: Minneapolis, MN (Remote to start; Hybrid expected in the future)
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Company

Our client is a fast-growing, entrepreneurial organization within the adventure, travel, and outdoor lifestyle space. As the company continues to scale, it is focused on establishing a strong internal financial infrastructure to support long-term growth, rigor, and operational excellence.

Position Overview

We are seeking a hands-on, growth-oriented Controller who thrives in a builder environment. This role is ideal for someone looking to step up from an Assistant Controller or Senior Accounting role into broader ownership. You will shape and mature the finance function, manage the monthly close, elevate financial reporting, and ensure the company maintains a strong liquidity structure.

This position offers exposure beyond traditional accounting, partnering closely with operations, HR, logistics, supply chain, and vendor management. The Controller will work directly with the CEO and collaborate cross-functionally across the business.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Reporting
  • Independently own and execute monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.

  • Increase rigor, consistency, and visibility in financial reporting.

  • Manage all general ledger activity, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statements.

  • Maintain and oversee cash-flow planning to ensure a strong liquidity structure.

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as the company scales.

Operational & Cross-Functional Support
  • Partner with operations on logistics, supply chain, inventory tracking, and vendor management.

  • Provide support on HR processes including payroll, benefits administration, and compliance.

  • Collaborate with leadership to develop scalable systems and processes.

  • Evaluate and implement improvements to financial and operational workflows.

Systems & Tools
  • Lead accounting activities in QuickBooks with strong daily proficiency.

  • Identify system enhancements or additional tools as needed for continued growth.

Leadership & Culture
  • Serve as a strategic partner and advisor to the CEO.

  • Bring a builderโ€™s mindsetโ€”proactively identifying opportunities, proposing solutions, and creating structure.

  • Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.

Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • Proven experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior-level accounting professional.

  • Strong, in-depth QuickBooks experience (required).

  • Experience independently completing monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial controls, and cash-flow planning.

  • Experience in a growth-stage or entrepreneurial environment strongly preferred.

  • Exposure to Private Equity environments is a plus.

  • Operational understanding of HR, benefits, logistics, supply chain, and vendor management preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to build processesโ€”not just maintain existing ones.

  • Growth-oriented, proactive, and comfortable expanding responsibilities over time.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to partner across departments.

  • Must reside in the greater Minneapolis area.

Why This Opportunity?
  • Build a finance function from the ground up.

  • High visibility, reporting directly to the CEO.

  • Broad cross-functional exposure beyond traditional finance responsibilities.

  • A culture that values initiative, ownership, and continuous improvement.

  • Remote to start, expected to shift to hybrid in Minneapolis as the team scales.
