Division 8 information

What is a Division 8?

A Division 8 job refers to work related to openings in construction, including doors, windows, frames, glass, and hardware. These professionals ensure that building entryways and interior passage systems meet safety, security, and aesthetic requirements. Jobs in this category can include door installers, glaziers, hardware specialists, and access control technicians.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Division 8 position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Division 8 position, which typically refers to roles in commercial construction focused on doors, frames, and hardware, strong knowledge of building codes, construction drawings, and product specifications is essential. Familiarity with project management software, takeoff tools, and certifications like Architectural Hardware Consultant (AHC) are common requirements. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills help professionals coordinate successfully with contractors and architects. These abilities ensure on-time delivery of materials, code compliance, and the smooth integration of Division 8 products into construction projects.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in a Division 8 role within construction?

Most Division 8 professionals spend their days reviewing project specifications, coordinating the selection and ordering of doors, frames, and hardware, and ensuring materials meet architectural requirements and building codes. They frequently interact with general contractors, architects, and suppliers to manage schedules, clarify technical requirements, and resolve product compatibility issues. Managing submittals, handling change orders, and conducting site visits to verify installations are also common tasks. This collaborative and detail-oriented workflow keeps construction projects on track and ensures successful installation of key building elements.
