Job Summary:
THIS IS AN ONGOING RECRUITMENT TO ESTABLISH A POOL OF ACCESS AIDES. If you apply, DRC staff person will reach out to evaluate your availability and current needs.
Access Aides perform a variety of tasks to support students with disabilities. Aides must have excellent communication and organizational skills, must be adaptable and willing to work with students with different backgrounds and abilities while keeping confidentiality. Aides collaborate with the student's accommodation coordinator in the DRC and faculty for training and ensure they are meeting the access needs of the student with a disability (SWD).
Aides will perform a variety of duties, depending upon the needs of the student and course. All aide work is meant to be neutral, meaning that the student's learning can still be assessed by the instructor. Examples include:
Laboratory:
  • Lab aides work in partnership with the student to complete a lab, project or assignment. The SWD is responsible for learning the course content and reading and preparing to conduct experiments or complete exercises. The SWD will direct the lab aide to perform the tasks they need assistance with.
  • Lab aides do not lead experimentation or guide the student in the activity. Lab aides should not be acting independently of the student unless directed by the instructor or for clear safety concerns. The student or lab aide may contact the faculty member for further instruction if there are safety concerns.
  • In science courses, lab aides work at the direction of the student to complete lab exercises. They may be asked to mix, cut, heat, weigh, or view specimens. The lab aide may need to describe and report back to the SWD any reactions, which might include change of color, shape, or size.
  • In anatomy labs, lab aides may describe muscles, movements, or other visual materials to the SWD.

Fine Arts Studios:
  • In studio art classes, lab aides carry out art/design tasks under the direction of the student to complete the assignment. The SWD will prepare for their assignment and design/plan their project. The lab aide will handle equipment, materials, and may assemble or construct projects as directed by the SWD.
  • Aides might describe aspects of a performance or artwork to the student.

Lecture/Discussion
  • Aides might describe or summarize aspects of instruction or discussion
  • Aides might prepare lecture notes and convert them into accessible file formats for use by the student

Other Activities
  • Aides might be required to work with a student one-on-one to describe/interpret course content and complete assignments or other projects outside of scheduled class times

Qualifications:
  • The applicant must:be a full or part-time UWSP student and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Some positions may require that a student have a minimum prior knowledge or taken minimum prerequisite courses in that field of study.

WAGE AND HOURS
Access aid wage is $11/hour. Hours worked are variable, depending on student need. 2-3 hours a week is most common.
